Serving in the U.S. Marine Corps in the 1960s, Dr. Baratta witnessed the events that led up to the Vietnam War and was motivated to find a way to abolish war from the earth. His studies in history led him to his careers in academia and writing. Dr. Baratta initially obtained a Bachelor of Arts in liberal arts from St. John's College in Annapolis, Maryland, in 1969. He concluded his studies at Boston University, where he earned a Master of Arts in history in 1977, a Doctor of Philosophy in international diplomatic history in 1982 and a Master of Arts in Teaching in education in 1991.
Dr. Baratta began his career as an instructor in the night school of the University of Lowell, now part of the University of Massachusetts system, followed by several teaching posts at Boston University, the University of Massachusetts Boston and Boston College. Joining the faculty at Worcester State University as an assistant professor in 1999, he retired as full professor emeritus in the department of history and political science as of 2019. He taught world history, international relations, and history of science and technology. In addition to his primary vocation, Dr. Baratta has contributed as a speaker to his field and has held positions with the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations, World Federalist Movement, the Center for Global Community and World Law and the Society for the Study of Internationalism.
Dr. Baratta has notably advocated for reforming structures within the United Nations through his association with various pertinent organizations as well as through his publications. He has served as a researcher for the Center for UN Reform Education and as a United Nations representative on behalf of the World Association for World Federation in New York from 1985 to 1988. A scholar of the World Federalist Movement, Dr. Baratta was also a leader of the Coalition for a Strong United Nations in Boston from 1993 to 1998.
As a respected voice in his field, Dr. Baratta has penned numerous chapters in books, newspaper op-eds, conference papers, articles and reviews. His fields are the history of the movement for world federal government, U.N. reform, permanent peace, peacekeeping, human rights, and diplomacy. He has authored three books as well, including "The Politics of World Federation" (two volumes). Dr. Baratta has also written about the work of G.A. Borgese, a prominent Italian-American writer and literary critic, and was recently interviewed for a film documentary about him.
Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Baratta has received several grants for his research efforts and was presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award, the highest honor conferred by Marquis Who's Who. Professionally, he has maintained his affiliation with the American Historical Association, the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations, the Council on Peace Research in History and the Phi Alpha Theta National History Honor Society. In his spare time, Dr. Baratta enjoys personal fitness, hiking, traveling, gardening, and popular and symphonic music. He is married to Virginia Swain.
