Having accrued nearly 40 years of inimitable expertise in the field of French history, Dr. Ranum earned the distinguished title of a professor emeritus at Johns Hopkins University in 1999. He joined the history department of the aforementioned institution in 1969, for which he became the chairperson during the course of his tenure. Dr. Ranum previously served on behalf of Columbia University between 1961 and 1969, and initially entered the field as an assistant professor at the University of Southern California in 1960.
Inspired by his mother to enter the field of education, Dr. Ranum developed a special interest in French history, and attained a Bachelor of Arts from Macalester College in 1955. He subsequently attended the University of Minnesota, from which he attained a Master of Arts in 1957 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1961. Since concluding his academic efforts, Dr. Ranum maintained his professional affiliation with the American Historical Association, the Society of French Historical Studies, Institute de France, Academie des Sciences Morales at Politiques and Sociedad de l'Histoire de France. Throughout his career, Dr. Ranum also wrote several books and texts on French history, including "Tyranny from Antiquity to Renaissance France."
At John Hopkins University, Dr. Ranum was most proud of the time he served as the chairperson of the history department, due to his ability to build and influence appointments. While presiding over the program, it became one of the top ten history departments in the country. Additionally, he also maintained involvement as the chairperson of the GRE Educational Testing Service and as an elected honorary council member of the Western Society of French History. Specializing in the politics and culture of 17th century French history, Dr. Ranum was presented with a bronze medal from the city of Tours, France.
