Dr. Brown is a retired, private practice psychologist who worked in a handful of settings throughout her four decades in the field. Concluding her career in 2013 as a school psychologist specialist, she spent many of her years in the Los Angeles public school system as a teacher, advisor, coordinator, vocational counselor and counselor aide. Dr. Brown also lent her expertise to the University of Southern California Verdugo Hills Hospital as a psychological assistant as well as to the American Indian Free Clinic in Compton, California, as a community health worker.
Enjoying the many perks of working in health care, Dr. Brown especially enjoyed serving as a mentor to those pursuing a career as school psychologists. She also had the opportunity to teach at the academic level part-time as an instructor at California State University in Dominguez Hills and Los Angeles for many years. Furthermore, Dr. Brown served as an assistant behavior science consultant for the Coalition of Mental Health Professionals in Los Angeles from 1992 to 1993.
Attending college in California, Dr. Brown first earned a Bachelor of Arts at California State University, Dominguez Hills in 1975. She soon after completed a Master of Science at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles in 1976 and a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of California Los Angeles in 1991. Dr. Brown is a licensed psychologist, educational psychologist and school psychologist.
A member of the Association of Black Psychologists, Dr. Brown previously served the association as a secretary and historian. She is also a member of several other industry-related organizations, including the American Psychological Association, the National Association of School Psychologists, the California Association of School Psychologists, the Los Angeles Association of School Psychologists and the Pan African Scholars Association.
