Charles Hosler was born in Honey Brook Pennsylvania in 1924. He attended Penn State, Bucknell University, and MIT. He studied Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Aerological Engineering and holds a B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in Meteorology from Penn State. He served for three years in the U.S. Navy (1943-1946) during World War II. He spent one year in the Pacific Asiatic Theatre on various ships as a weather forecaster at Pearl Harbor, Guam and Okinawa and as the observer on Typhoon reconnaissance aircraft. After 20 years in the Naval Reserve he retired with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He served Penn State University in every academic capacity, including Professor and Head of the Department of Meteorology, Dean of the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, Senior Vice President for Research and Dean of the Graduate School and Acting Executive Vice President and Provost, before retiring in 1991. He was a distinguished alumnus of Penn State University. He held three presidential appointments in Washington and served on the National Science Board for nine years. He was Past President and Honorary Member of the American Meteorological Society and chaired many committees of the society as well as other scientific fu'1d engineering organizations and the World Meteorological Organization. He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering. He received a number of awards for his research and administrative excellence. He chaired and served on dozens of committees and commissions of the National Research Council, such as, the Committee on the modernization of the National Weather Service and the panel on weather support for the space shuttle program. He published over 100 papers and delivered over 1,000 invited lectures. He served as a consultant to the power industry on the design of cooling systems and to the space industry on the design of experiments in space lab, Apollo flights, Apollo Soyuz, etc. He was chairman of the board of the University Corporation for Atmospheric research and acting president. For over fifty years, he gave frequent testimony to Congress on weather and climate and served as consultant to industry, congressional committees, federal agencies, and the White House. He was married for eighteen years to the late Gladys Cheesbrough who bore four children and was married for thirty years to the late Anna Stahel. He traveled widely. He found relaxation in outdoor activities and physical labor.
