A well-respected lawyer with more than four decades of expertise to his credit, Mr. Kitchen co-founded Kitchen and Turrentine PLLC, in 2019. Working with individuals, businesses and government agencies statewide, he specializes in business, municipal and employment law and civil litigation, as well as litigation and transactional affairs on behalf of clients. Moreover, he has extensive expertise in civil rights, contracts and constitutional law cases and has notably appeared before the state and federal trial and appellate courts. Mr. Kitchen is the former county attorney of Durham, and served ably for a decade in his position until 2009. He subsequently spent another decade in private practice with the Stark Law Group in Durham and the Turrentine Law Firm before forming Kitchen and Turrentine PLLC.
Prior to embarking upon his professional journey, Mr. Kitchen pursued a formal education at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, from which he received a Bachelor of Arts in humanities in 1977. Pivoting towards legal studies, he graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1980. Mr. Kitchen has been admitted to practice law by the North Carolina Bar Association, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, the U.S. District Court for the Middle, Eastern and Western Districts of North Carolina and the Supreme Court of the United States.
While pursuing a law degree, Mr. Kitchen clerked with the Durham County Attorney's Office. After graduating, he began his distinguished career as an assistant county attorney for the county in 1980. From 1986 to 1996, he served as the county attorney for Alamance County in Graham, North Carolina. Throughout his career, Mr. Kitchen also provided his expertise to various private organizations, and is currently on retainer for the Onslow Water and Sewer Authority in Jacksonville, North Carolina, as general counsel.
A native of North Carolina, Mr. Kitchen has served in an influential capacity on behalf of his home state for numerous years. A past president of his local American Heart Association in Durham, he also contributed prolifically with the American Red Cross as a national chairperson of the awards and recognition committee. At the local Red Cross chapter, he served as a member of the board of directors, as the treasurer and a chapter chairperson. In support of his legal career, Mr. Kitchen has been affiliated with several key professional organizations. Among them, he is a member of the North Carolina Bar Association, where he earned distinction as the chair of the constitutional law section. Moreover, he is also a member and past president of the North Carolina County Attorneys Association and the National Association of County Civil Attorneys. He also served on the Board of Directors of National Association of Counties.
An award-winning attorney, Mr. Kitchen was recognized with the Ralph W. Ketner Employee Productivity Award from the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners in 1999 and the Health and Safety Services National Award from the American Red Cross in 2004. He was also named as the County Attorney of the Year by the North Carolina Association of County Attorneys. Mr. Kitchen is a celebrated Marquis listee, having been featured in Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in the South and Southwest and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
