Dr. Richard S. Colfax boasts more than three decades of expertise in international business in the Asia-Pacific region. Operating as a consultant, trainer and teacher in various multicultural environments throughout his career, he has also served as a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt professional and a Six Sigma Black Belt professional. Dr. Colfax has excelled as the senior human resources consultant, general manager and operations manager of Colfax Inc. since 2004, where he provides international business consulting services, facilitation and mediation services, and develops and delivers international human resources systems for both public and private entities. Furthermore, he has been a senior partner and consultant for Allied Business Consultants Inc., since 2014. Dr. Colfax has additionally contributed to the University of Guam (UOG) in Mangilao since 1994, where he has since become a professor of human resource management and management in the School of Business and Public Administration and a graduate faculty coordinator on campus.
Instrumental in the establishment of the human resource management degree program at UOG, Dr. Colfax briefly served as the chairman of the management and marketing department. He has also been involved on various university committees, including as a member of the student affairs advisory coordinating council since 1999 and the chairman of the promotion and tenure committee since 2010. Outside of his commitments to UOG, Dr. Colfax is a lecturer at Tokyo Engineering University, a program development consultant and lecturer at Nippon Engineering College, a trainer and lecturer at Hachioji Nursing College and an adult development trainer at the Hachioji Women's Center in Japan.
Passionate about his civic duties, Dr. Colfax is a supporting member of the WorldWatch Organization in Boulder, Colorado, and a member of the Global Services Corps in San Francisco. Between 1987 and 1992, he participated in a supporting family of The Hunger Project in Tokyo. Dr. Colfax was also involved with Guam Creative Hands, which presents undergraduate art shows for students of UOG. Notably, he is an accomplished 2-D artist who specializes in acrylics and block prints and his work has appeared in numerous juried art shows over the years.
A prolific writer, Dr. Colfax has authored, co-authored and edited many books and book chapters, in addition to contributing multiple articles to peer-reviewed journals. The co-editor for Business Success Monthly Business Newspaper, a role he has held since 1999, he has published several books, such as "Finding the King of the Corporate Jungle: A Leadership Fable," with Karri T. Perez in 2009, "The Result of Japanese Management: Karoshi" with Krista Cain in 2006 and "Stress and the Stress Process Among Japanese Office Workers" in 1993. He co-authored "Chapter 5: Reinforcing Responsible Learning: Acknowledgement of Syllabus & Course Requirements" with John J. Rivera and Joann C. E. Diego in 2019 which appears in Y. Inoue-Smith (Ed.), Faculty Roles and Changing Expectations in the New Age. IGI Global. He also co-authored articles such as "The Jell-O Theory of Leadership" (2018) with John J. Rivera and Sonny Perez, and "Slinky-Coil Effect for Management Theories" (2018) with John J. Rivera and Joann C. E. Diego.
Dr. Colfax is also active as a member of various professional organizations, including the American Association of Higher Education, the American Psychological Society and the Organizational Development Network. Furthermore, he has served in various roles with the Society for Human Resource Management and is an elected fellow of the American Institute of Stress.
Always seeking opportunities to continue learning, Dr. Colfax initially graduated with a Bachelor of Science in economics and comparative literature from Sophia University in Tokyo in 1976. He subsequently earned a Master of Arts in human resource leadership from Azusa Pacific University in California in 1986. Following these accomplishments, Dr. Colfax enrolled at the Fielding Institute in California, obtaining a Master of Arts in human development and a Doctor of Philosophy in human and organizational systems in 1992 and 1993, respectively.
Continuing his international academic efforts, Dr. Colfax matriculated at the University of Guam, where he attained a Master of Business Administration in 2013 and a Master of Public Administration in 2015. He also holds multiple U.S. and international human resources and management certifications, including a Global Professional in Human Resources (GPHR), a Senior Professional in Human Resources International (SPHRi), a Certified Manager (CM), a Professional in Human Resources (PHR) and a Human Resource Management Professional (HRMP). Likewise, Dr. Colfax is professionally certified in risk and crisis management from the Emergency Management Institute through the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Pacific Asia Travel Association.
In light of his exceptional undertakings throughout his career, Dr Colfax has, as Advisor, guided the University of Guam's SHRM Student Chapter to 22 consecutive Superior Merit Awards and 3 Outstanding Chapter Awards from the Society for Human Resource Management from 1998 through 2019. The society also honored him with a Foundation Advisor Impact Award in 2019. He has received several accolades from UOG as well, including a Faculty Teaching Excellence Award from School of Business and Public Administration in 2013 and an All-Star Award from the vice president of student affairs in 1998, 1999 and 2000. He was also named one of only 54 Case-Carnegie Institute's "Carnegie Professor of the Year" for 1999 from Guam. In recognition of his support and guidance of the Pohnpei students at the University, Dr. Colfax was named a "Lepen Tolen-U" or Honorary Chief of Tolen U in Kichi Territory of Pohnpei State in the Federated States of Micronesia by the Traditional Chief of Kichi Territory of Pohnpei in 2005.
Success is never a solitary endeavor and is due in large part to a strong support network starting at home. Richard's support team has been anchored by his life partner/spouse Toyoko (nee Suzuki) since 1974. It is further strengthened by their children and grandchildren: son Richard Shigemichi Colfax married to Jennifer Frazier and their daughter Lucy; Michael Tyro Colfax, MD; and Christine Aya (Colfax) Miya married to Daisuke Miya and their son Kai.
