WINSTON-SALEM, NC, May 12, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Jim Starr has been inducted into Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Mr. Starr is renowned as a beloved radio personality and the president of the North Carolina chapter of the National Black Radio Hall of Fame. His interest in broadcasting began in his childhood, after the Christmas gift of a radio eventually grew into a large collection. At 43, Mr. Starr had landed a job at Nashville's WVOL, the same station that provided television mogul Oprah Winfrey with her first break.

While studying toward a communications degree, Mr. Starr was referred to Mal Goode, the first African American ABC News anchor, by a professor. He fondly recalls meeting with Mr. Goode, who promised to help him break into the radio business once he had finished school. Mr. Goode delivered on his promise, and Mr. Starr began his radio career in earnest at WCEM AM 1240 Continuous Country in Cambridge, Maryland radio in 1986.

Mr. Starr further flourished as a program host and an announcer for WCIC South Carolina and Magic 94.7, a Cumulus Broadcasting station. Subsequently, he found success as an early-morning fixture on Winston-Salem's WTOB 96.3FM, where his show was nominated for Best Morning Drive. Retiring from his lengthy career in radio in 2017, Mr. Starr notably helped propel WVOL Nashville to the #1 spot in the market while garnering the Best Blues and Soul Radio Station Award.

Personally, Mr. Starr has collected numerous accolades for his exemplary broadcasting work. He is the recipient of a Blues Over the Airwaves Award and was inducted into the National Black Radio Hall of Fame's Atlanta chapter. In the coming years, he hopes to further excel as the president of the Winston-Salem chapter of the National Black Radio Hall of Fame, utilizing his position to honor underappreciated contributors to the format.

His family includes: mother Cora James Spates, father Chavis Witherspoon, grandparents Ervin Witherspoon, Marion Witherspoon, Besty Spates, John Spates, and many loving aunts and uncles. He would also like to mention a few of his cousins, Judy Moore, Frizell Moore, Dr. Sheila Witherspoon, Janet Witherspoon, Willie Edward Hannah, Frank Gamble, Sarah Moore, his three brothers, Abraham Witherspoon, Jim Witherspoon and Hayward Witherspoon. To the rest of the family members thanks for the love.
