Dr. Kim, having grown up in South Korea, one of the poorest countries in the world while he was coming of age, aspired to make a difference by offering his assistance to developing countries. Beginning his career in 1964 in Minneapolis as a research economist for North Star Research and Development Institute, he subsequently became an econometrician for Pillsbury Company in Minneapolis, until 1966. Since that time, Dr. Kim has devoted his career to academia, teaching economics courses at the University of Minnesota before being acquired by the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. Among his teaching accomplishments at Notre Dame, he directed 14 Ph.Ds in Economics under his direction of their doctoral dissertations.
Having earned the distinguished status of full professor emeritus in 2016 after teaching for more than five decades, Dr. Kim's tenure at Notre Dame included teaching economics at both the graduate and undergraduate levels in the Economics Department and in the Kellogg Institute for International Studies and as a faculty fellow at the Liu Institute in Asian studies. He also provided his expertise as a guest scholar at the Institute of Economics Research at Hitotsubashi University in Tokyo, a visiting professor at the University of Innsbruck in Austria, Maastricht School of Business in the Netherlands, Koryu University in South Korea, the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, and a visiting lecturer at the University of Nairobi in Kenya. Well-regarded in his field, Dr. Kim consulted for numerous institutions and government agencies, including Nacional Financiera in Mexico, the Human Management College in China, the U.S. Department of Transportation, and as an economic policy advisor for the Agency for International Development.
In addition to Dr. Kim's full-time commitments, he was a fellow of the Asian Research Institute and the Pan-Asia Institute between 1970 and 1971. He was also a visiting fellow at the East-West Center in Hawaii during 1988. A prolific scholar, he published more than 80 professional journal articles and 14 books in a wide ranging areas of development, international trade, finance, and statistical analysis, with a large number of works focusing thematically on the issues of economic growth, environment, poverty, and distributional equity. He published a book in 1985, titled "Industrial Policy and Development in South Korea." Dr. Kim also authored or co-authored numerous other books, including "The Political Economy of Tanzania, 1979", "Debt and Development in Latin America" in 1985, "State, Markets and Development" in 1994, "Acquisition, Adaptation and Development Technologies in Japan" in 1995, "Growth, Distribution and Political Change: Asia and Wider World" in 1999, and "Lewsian Turning Point in the Chinese Economy" in 2014.
Born in Busan, South Korea, Dr. Kim attended school locally, graduating cum laude from Seoul National University in 1959. After arriving in the U.S., he attended the University of Minnesota where he acquired both a Master of Art in political science in 1961 and a Doctor of Philosophy in economics in 1967. Dr. Kim is a member and former president of the Korea-American Economic Association. He is also a member of the North America Economic and Finance Association, the Econometric Society and the American Economic Association. Securing two Rockefeller Foundation grants between 1971 and 1977, Dr. Kim was later recognized for his achievements with a Merit Award from the U.S, Agency of International Development in 1980 and Monbusho (Ministry of Education in Japan) for the years of 1992 and 1993.
