Prior to his current appointment, Mr. McKenzie worked as the vice president and general counsel for B&M Technological Services Inc., an engineering research and development company based out of Cambridge, Massachusetts. Previously, he briefly served at Boston University as an associate grants and contracts administrator and the assistant director of the Office of Sponsored Programs between 1978 and 1979. Mr. McKenzie began his prolific career as the assistant attorney general for the commonwealth of Massachusetts from 1976 to 1979.
Before embarking on his professional path, Mr. McKenzie pursued an education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, earning a Bachelor of Arts in economics and political science, magna cum laude, in 1973. He concluded his studies at the Boston University School of Law in 1976, graduating with a Doctor of Jurisprudence. Following these accomplishments, Mr. McKenzie was admitted to practice law before the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts, the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts, the United States Tax Court, the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit and the Supreme Court of the United States.
Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Mr. McKenzie has participated in numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. Devout in his faith, he has contributed to the Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary as a member of the advisory board for the Center for Urban Ministerial Education. He has been additionally active as legal counsel and the vice chair for renovation and the business and finance committees for the People's Baptist Church in Boston. Furthermore, Mr. McKenzie enjoys traveling around the world and is an avid photographer with an interest in photographing places of worship regardless of denomination.
Moreover, Mr. McKenzie held the position of treasurer and member of the Clients' Security Board of the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts and as a member of the Judicial Nomination Council of Massachusetts. Notably, Mr. McKenzie has found much success as the Honorary Consul to Boston for the Government of Jamaica since 2010, a post in which he represents the interests of Jamaica, and operates the Jamaican Consulate which provides services to thousands of Jamaicans residing in New England.
In addition to his primary vocation, Mr. McKenzie remains associated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. Formerly recruited as the president of the Massachusetts Probate and Family Law American Inn of Court, he has served on the Standing Committee on Clients' Protection of the American Bar Association. He was also affiliated with the Boston University School of Law Alumni Association in the role of the vice president of the Executive Committee and is President-Elect for the 2020-2021 term. Likewise, Mr. McKenzie is a member of the Massachusetts Bar Association, the Massachusetts Black Lawyers Association, and the American Bar Association.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Mr. McKenzie has accrued several accolades throughout his impressive career. Recognized as a fellow of the Massachusetts Bar Foundation and the American Bar Foundation, he has been honored as the Minority Businessperson of the Year for Region I by the U.S. Small Business Administration. Celebrated as the runner-up for the U.S. Department of Defense's Minority Supplier of the Year, he was additionally presented with the Plumber Turner Award from St. John's Baptist Church and the Liberating Vision Award for Community Service from the Greater Boston chapter of the National Council of Negro Women. Spotlighted by the Massachusetts Family and Probate American Inn of Court as a featured attorney, Mr. McKenzie was selected for inclusion among Boston Magazine's Massachusetts Super Lawyers List in 2003, 2004 and 2006.
