Dr. Shpilberg is renowned as a physician with nearly 30 years of service to patients in the Pleasure Ridge Park, Kentucky area. Inspired by his father, also a physician, he fostered an early interest in the field of medicine with an emphasis on patient education and preventative health, and as a self-professed "people person," he decided a career in clinical medicine would be a perfect fit. He subsequently pursued an education at Emory University and the University of Louisville, earning a Bachelor of Arts in art history in 1983 and a Doctor of Medicine in 1988. Notably, Dr. Shpilberg is honored to have served multiple generations of patients with grace and compassion, as well as to have developed deep relationships with the community in which he practices.
From 1989 to 1991, Dr. Shpilberg completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at the Tucson Hospital Medical Education Center in Tucson, AZ. Between 1990 and 2008, he further flourished with Pleasure Ridge Primary Care, a multi-physician family medicine clinic, as the managing partner and the clinical director of laboratory services. From 2008 to 2010, he served as a managing partner of Dixie Primary Care before accepting a position with Norton Community Medical Associates, where he continues to excel to this day. He joined his father in practice in Pleasure Ridge Park and has remained at the same location until today. The practice has grown and thrived ultimately merging with the Norton Healthcare System in 2010 to better provide comprehensive healthcare to its longtime patients. Dr. Shpilberg has always valued promoting education to the new generations of healthcare providers and has served as preceptor to allied medical students enrolled at the University of Kentucky and Indiana Wesleyan University as voluntary gratis faculty since 2013. He also served as clinical chief of the department of family medicine to Jewish hospitals in Louisville helping institute best practice protocols during his tenure from 1998 to 2006.
He also served as medical director to long term care facilities from 1996 to 2008 including Kings Daughters and Trilogy Health Services helping to implement standard care guidance still in use today.
He is dual board certified in the specialties of family practice and urgent care medicine and has been awarded national commission quality assurance. He is also certified in diabetes management and patient centered medical home level III. He continues his educational pursuits, completing over 1,000 hours of continuing education.
He has extensive public speaking experience, and is sought out by both industry and not for profit healthcare systems such as Novo Nordisk, Humana, Norton Healthcare, Jewish Hospital Services, and others.
Moreover, Dr. Shpilberg has found success on voluntary faculty at the University of Kentucky since 2013 and Indiana Wesleyan University since 2015. A member of staff at eight hospitals in the Louisville area, he worked as the former medical director of King's Daughters and Sons Nursing Home from 2004 to 2008. He has completed more than 600 hours of continuing education, and is board-certified in family practice, urgent care, and ambulatory medicine in addition to being recognized by the American Diabetes Association as a quality diabetic care physician. A sought-after speaker and presenter, Dr. Shpilberg has delivered professional continuing education on topics as diverse as hospital records management and controlled substances, hypertension therapies, and novel medication support for major depressive disorders. He has also completed Norton's Physical Leadership Academy in 2018 and currently is active in the Norton Diabetes Task Force.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Shpilberg is extensively involved in pharmaceutical research, and has contributed to trials of drugs for use in the treatment of chronic mental health disorders, diabetes and hypertension, and acute respiratory infections. He has offered his years of research specialty to numerous manufacturers and insurance providers, including work for Novo Nordisk, Aetna, and Janssen Pharmaceuticals. In the coming years, he hopes to transition to more research work, particularly in diabetes, and begin winding down his clinical practice. Among other honors, Dr. Shpilberg has been presented with the American Medical Association's Physician Recognition Award annually from 1995 to the present, and was recognized as one of Healthgrades' Most Compassionate Physicians in 2012, 2013, and 2014.
