She had worked on behalf of the university since 1975, and previously found success with such higher learning institutions as Central Michigan University, the University of Southern California, the University of California Berkeley, and Northwest Missouri State College between 1963 and 1975. Before her entry into academia, Dr. Shelden initially excelled as a teacher with Lakeview Public Schools in Oregon from 1960 to 1962.
Born in Poughkeepsie, New York, Dr. Shelden chose to follow in the footsteps of her parents, who both earned distinction as school teachers. Her aunt, for whom she is named, was also a university administrator and her uncle likewise served as a physical education educator. After graduating from high school, Dr. Shelden was accepted to the University of Iowa, from which she received a Bachelor of Arts in 1960. Continuing her studies, she attended the University of Oregon where she completed a Master of Science in 1963. Dr. Shelden concluded her academic efforts in 1974, having attained a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Southern California.
Aligned with several industry-related organizations in support of her career, Dr. Shelden is a life member of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, an organization that works closely with those engaged in physical education, recreation, fitness, sports and coaching, health education and dance. She is also a member of the American Association of University Professors, the North America Society of Sport History and the South Carolina Association of Health. Furthermore, Dr. Shelden is a member of Kappa Delta Pi, where she served as the treasurer between 1980 and 1989.
A dedicated civic advocate, Dr. Shelden has led initiatives with the American Red Cross of Spartanburg, serving as the chairperson of the safety committee between 1983 and 1986 and again from 1993 until 1995. In light of her community efforts and outstanding career experience, she has been showcased in the third edition of Who's Who in American Education and the 16th edition of Who's Who of American Women. Outside of her professional circles, Dr. Shelden enjoys such diversions as skiing and hiking.
