Dr. Grossmann has been the Rudolph and Florence Dean Professor of Chemical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University since 1990. He completed his undergraduate degree in chemical engineering at the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City in 1974, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Imperial College in 1977. Dr. Grossmann worked in 1978 as a research and development engineer at the Instituto Mexicano del Petróleo in Mexico City. Beginning his academic career in 1979, he headed the department of chemical engineering between 1994 and 2002 and was director of the Center for Advanced Process Decision-Making between 2004 and 2016. The center is comprised of 20 petroleum, chemical and engineering companies. He also held various positions with the National Academy of Engineering, and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), and served on the advisory boards at Purdue University, Princeton University, Cornell University and Rutgers University, among other institutions.
The goal of Dr. Grossmann's research throughout his career has been to develop novel mathematical programming models and techniques for a variety of problems in process systems engineering. He has given many plenary talks, as well as numerous seminars at universities in the United States, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Germany, Mexico, Russia, Spain, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. He co-chaired the 1989 Foundations of Computer-Aided Process Design Conference and the 2003 Foundations of Computer-Aided Process Operations Conference. Even more impressively, Dr. Grossmann has authored over 700 articles in various scholarly journals, is an associate editor for the AIChE Journal and is a member of the editorial board of several journals, including Computers and Chemical Engineering, Journal of Global Optimization and Optimization and Engineering.
Dr. Grossmann is a longstanding member of AIChE, the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences, the Institution of Chemical Engineers, the Mathematical Optimization Society and the American Chemical Society, among other organizations. He also chaired the Computers and Systems Technology division of AIChE.
The recipient of dozens of awards between 1986 and 2019 for his work in chemical engineering, his publications and teachings, Dr. Grossmann most recently received from AIChE the 2019 Founders Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Field of Chemical Engineering. He also received an ETH Zürich Chemical Engineering Medal in 2017, the Sargent Medal from the Institution of Chemical Engineers in 2015 and was named One of the Most Influential Scientific Minds by Thomson Reuters in 2015. Dr. Grossmann is most proud of the Presidential Young Investigator's Award he received when he was an assistant professor, which was signed by President Ronald Reagan. Another award he was proud to receive was the William Walker Award from AIChE in 1997 for excellence in contributions to engineering. Dr. Grossmann has received several honorary doctorates from such institutions as Åbo Akademi in Finland, the Universidad de Alicante and the Universidad de Cantabria in Spain, the Technical University of Dortmund in Germany, the Kazan National Research Technological University in Russia, the University of Maribor in Slovenia and the Universidad Nacional del Litoral in Argentina. He has been included in dozens of editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the East.
Dr. Grossmann received a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering from Universidad Iberoamericana in 1974. He soon after earned a Master of Science in chemical engineering in 1975 and Doctor of Philosophy in chemical engineering in 1977 from Imperial College. Married to Blanca Espinal Zabalza, Dr. Grossmann has three children and six grandchildren. In his free time, he loves studying the history of mathematics and listening to classical music.
