A native of Taiwan, Dr. Hsieh earned a Bachelor of Arts in agricultural chemistry at National Taiwan University in 1959. He concluded his academic efforts at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, earning a Master of Science in 1967 and a Doctor of Philosophy in biochemical engineering in 1969. Dr. Hsieh was certified in general toxicology in 1970.
A respected educator for more than four decades, Dr. Hsieh began his professional career as a professor of environmental toxicology at the University of California Davis in 1969. He subsequently found success at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology as a professor of biology between 1997 and 2000. Moreover, Dr. Hsieh was additionally active at the Chinese Medical University in Taiwan as a visiting professor between 2007 and 2010.
Outside of his full-time commitments in academia, Dr. Hsieh worked as a consultant to the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, and the Stauffer Chemical Company in Richmond, California, between 1982 and 1984, the World Health Organization in Korea between 1984 and 1985 and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 1994. He further flourished as the director of the training center grant in environmental technology with the University of California Davis and the National Institutes of Health between 1983 and 1993 and an investigator for the National Health Research Institute in Taiwan between 2003 and 2007. Among other roles, Dr. Hsieh provided his expertise as a science advisor on behalf of the Taiwan Environmental Protection Administration, the Taiwan Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Formosan Plastic Corporation.
During his illustrious career, Dr. Hsieh was known for his success in producing a sufficient quantity of radio-labelled aflatoxins in 1967 to have facilitated chemical and toxicological research on this group of food-borne carcinogenic mycotoxins. Additionally, Dr. Hsieh advanced the methodology of health risk assessment of American beef related to mad cow disease to enable evidence-based decision making of the Taiwan government to import boneless American beef in 2005. For his contributions, Dr. Hsieh was awarded a Service Medal from the Taiwan Ministry of Health in 2006.
Aligned with several industry-related organizations to support his career, Dr. Hsieh remains a member of the Society of Toxicology, the American-Chinese Toxicology Society, the American Society of Microbiology and the American Chemical Society. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Hsieh has been showcased in the 45th through 50th editions of Who's Who in America, as well as the 29th through 32nd editions of Who's Who in the World.
