With a background in financial services and more than 20 years of innovative work in econometric modeling, Dr. Zhang has developed a reputation as one of the leading theorists on international exchange rates and Asian currencies. He began his career in the early 1990s as a mathematics student at Heze University, with which he would complete two years of coursework. He subsequently transferred to Qufu Normal University, earning a Bachelor of Science in mathematics in 1996. In 1999, Dr. Zhang graduated from Fudan University with a Master of Science in mathematics.
Dr. Zhang subsequently obtained a Doctor of Philosophy in economics from Shanghai University of Finance and Economics in 2002, and joined Shanghai Golden Investment Management Ltd. as a researcher later that same year. He would remain active with the aforementioned company until 2004, at which point he became appointed as a researcher for Tianyi Securities. In 2004, Dr. Zhang accepted his first academic position as an assistant professor in the College of Economics and Management at Zhaoqing University, where he advanced as an associate professor and a professor in 2005 and 2012 respectively. He worked at Zhaoqing University until October 2015.
Since October 2015, Dr. Zhang has excelled as a professor at the School of Finance at Nanjing University of Finance and Economics. In addition to teaching, he continues his research practice, and has been published in journals including the China Economic Review and the Journal of Applied Finance and Banking. His early work focused on application of existing econometric models to the market behavior of the Chinese renminbi, and has expanded to analysis of exchange rate prediction across several Asian currencies and the proposal of a novel ratio for predicting the validity of absolute purchasing power parity between nations with unequal GDP. He has become renowned for this ratio model of absolute purchasing power parity, he also proposes a rule of thumb for the validity of absolute purchasing power parity in a working paper, and he plans to continue his work on the implications and applications of the theory in the coming years. Outside of economics research, he also likes to think about other social science issues, such as higher education and politics.
In terms of life, Dr. Zhang insists on watching English TV series and listening to English blogs every day to improve his poor English listening and speaking ability. He takes traditional Chinese medicine every day and insists on jogging every week because of his bad health. He likes freedom, convenience and simplicity. Although he is not optimistic about the future, he still works hard every day. His personal creed: do something, and give up something else; if choose to do, then try to do it well.
