ALEXANDRIA, VA, June 02, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Willie J. Winfree has been included in Marquis Who's Who. After serving as a commissioned officer and major in the U.S. Army Dental Corps during the late-1970s and early-1980s, Dr. Winfree found success in private practice for more than 15 years. In 1999, he joined the Howard University College of Dentistry's Department of Restorative Services, where he has served as both the chairperson and director. Additionally, he has parleyed his knowledge of his discipline to students as an associate professor at the University since 2014. During this time, Dr. Winfree has also gained valuable expertise as the dental director of the Bel Alton Regional Dental Center and on the board of directors for the Bel Alton Alumni Association Community Development Corporation.
Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Winfree honed his expertise in the field as the chairperson of Howard University's Comprehensive Dentistry Department, the interim clinical director for the College of Dentistry, a course coordinator for behavioral dentistry and the dental practice readiness curriculum, and a grantee, researcher and care patient coordinator for HIV research through the University. A devoted educator and dental expert, he also co-developed the Caries Management Clinic and sat as a committee member for the Institute for Entrepreneurship, Leadership and Innovation. Though his career has been suffused with highlights, Dr. Winfree is especially proud of the work he has done over the last 20 years.
Prior to embarking upon his professional journey, Dr. Winfree earned a Bachelor of Science from Virginia Union University in 1972. Six years later, he received a Doctor of Dental Surgery at Howard University's College of Dentistry. While serving within the Army Dental Corps, he completed advanced training in periodontics, fixed prosthodontics and oral surgery, including IV sedation. Continuing his academic efforts, he attained a Master of Public Administration and a Master of Science in Healthcare Administration in 2003 from Southeastern University. Graduating from the ADEA Institute for Teaching and Learning in 2007, Dr. Winfree concluded his education after undertaking a fellowship through the ADEA Leadership Institute between 2008 and 2009.
To remain aware of developments effecting his field, Dr. Winfree maintains his professional alignment with a number of pertinent organizations. To wit, he is a member of the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists, the honorable society of Omicron Kappa Upsilon, the American Dental Association, the American Dental Education Association and the National Society of Dental Practitioners. With a plethora of knowledge at his disposal, Dr. Winfree has had the honor of consulting for the Northeast Board of Dental Examiners, and authoring such publications as "Group Practice Module Manual," "Oral Candidiasis Infections with Limited Clinical Findings" and "Addressing the Shortage of Dentists in Underserved Areas," which was published in Dentistry Today in 2006.
In light of his outstanding work in the field, Dr. Winfree has been recognized numerous times, earning the Community Outreach Award and the Chronically Ill and Aged Program Award through Howard University College of Dentistry in 2000 and 2004, respectively. Moreover, he received an Academic Excellence in Health Services Award through Southeastern University in 2003, the Governor's Citation from the Maryland Governor for Support and Contributions to the Bel Alton Community Center in 2013, and the Maryland General Assembly Citation in recognition of contributions toward establishing community development center programs on behalf of Charles County citizens, also in 2013. He also earned an Official Citation in recognition for his work on the center from Senator Thomas M. Middleton. Looking toward the future, Dr. Winfree intends to retire and teach on a part-time basis.
