John P. Harris, ScD possessed a great passion for management, actively engaging with employees and serving as a mentor to them.
BOULDER, CO, June 05, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who is proud to present John P. Harris, ScD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Harris celebrates 35 years of experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field.
Dr. Harris embarked upon his professional journey in 1952, having accepted a position as a research engineer on behalf of the Engineering Research Institute in Ann Arbor, Mich. In 1954, he joined IBM as an engineer on mass storage systems and instrumentation in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. until 1958. He then moved to IBM Research division in Yorktown, N.Y. to work on optical technologies. In 1961 he was selected by the IBM Fellowship Program to study for his Doctor of Science; he chose the University of Michigan for his study. Upon completing his ScD degree, he returned to IBM East Fishkill, N.Y. and worked on high-density semiconductor design. In 1966, he returned to Mass Storage engineering management in Boulder, Colo. He managed technology development and the major parts of the new Mass Storage Library system that was undergoing development. John moved to Mainz, Germany, in 1975, to assist the IBM facility in the manufacture and marketing of the Mass Storage System for European customers.
Enjoying a successful career as a development engineer, he continued to progress and advanced through several positions of leadership, including technology manager of General Products Division in Tucson, Ariz., and the director of the product assurance in General Products Division in San Jose, Calif. Dr. Harris remained with IBM and served as an IBM Director at headquarters in Purchase, N.Y., from 1983 to 1989.
Since embarking upon his profession and transitioning toward new and more challenging roles, Dr. Harris successfully advanced from overseeing 30 to approximately 270 employees as an executive in his field. He possessed a great passion for management, actively engaging with employees and serving as a mentor to them. He has long served as a wonderful inspiration to his coworkers throughout his career. To remain aware of developments affecting his field, Dr. Harris was the president of the local chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Harris has acquired multiple patents, including for the design of a cantilever design brush for a high acceleration electric motor and several others for magnetic recording technology. As a seasoned researcher in his field, he has contributed numerous articles to professional publications, as well as the book "Vibrational Modes of Bifilar Cantilever Beam." Since retirement, Dr. Harris has enjoyed a number of avocational endeavors, he served for six years as race captain for sailboat racing on Long Island Sound, served as President of the board in Big Elk Meadows, Colo. and held various leadership positions in his local church. Currently, he enjoys the role of publisher for his community monthly news publication the "Mirror," which he has done since 2013. He also maintains involvement with the Stamford Yacht Club and the Michigan Alumni Association.
Dr. Harris was married 63 years to his wife Dulcie. They have two children and three grandchildren. He currently resides in Boulder, Colo.
