He initially obtained a Doctor of Philosophy in 1984 at Saarland University. Dr. Fecht subsequently worked in a postdoctoral research position in the department of materials science and engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1984 to 1987.
In 1987, Dr. Fecht accepted a position with the California Institute of Technology as a senior research associate in the department of materials science. He would remain active with the aforementioned school until 1990, departing to teach metal physics at the University of Augsburg until 1993. Dr. Fecht was appointed as a chaired professor of materials science and the director of the Institute of Metals Research at Berlin Technical University from 1993 to 1997.
Since 1997, Dr. Fecht has excelled with the University of Ulm, serving as the director of the Institute of Functional Nanosystems, formerly known as the Institute of Micro and Nanomaterials, in addition to teaching. He further flourished as the director of EUREKA Metallurgy's European cluster office in 2015. Dr. Fecht has contributed as a visiting professor to institutions including the California Institute of Technology, Tohoku University, University of Southern China, Anna University, and Hefei University of Technology.
From 2001 to 2012, Dr. Fecht has provided his wealth of knowledge as a senior scientist at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. He has also participated as an invited member of the NanoMat Network and the Chemistry Cluster Munich. Likewise, Dr. Fecht has served on the editorial board of numerous professional publications, including Composite Materials Research, Letters on Materials, the International Journal of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology and Annals of Materials Science and Engineering.
Among many other accolades, Dr. Fecht is the recipient of a 2004 Materials Innovation Award from the German Engineering Association and the DFG G.W. Leibniz Award. He has been additionally recognized as a fellow of the European Academy of Sciences, the European Academy of Sciences and Arts and the Max Kade Foundation. Furthermore, Dr. Fecht is a member of the Materials Science and Engineering Expert Committee.
