Ms. Brown has served since 2014 as Secretary/Treasurer of the nonprofit Brian Wall Foundation, which benefits working artists in financial need. An accomplished public relations and advertising executive, Ms. Brown retired as a partner of Brown and Collins in San Francisco in 2009, having accrued over 30 years of expertise. Prior to establishing her business, she served as the public relations director for the San Francisco Art Institute, and held various roles throughout San Francisco at local galleries. During the 1970s, Ms. Brown notably co-founded the San Francisco Art Dealers Association, co-founded and served on the board of directors for 80 Langton Street and, during the mid-1980s, was the co-founder and board director of Zyzzyva.
Outside of her full-time commitments, Ms. Brown often wrote for various publications. Her first assignment was as an art columnist for City Magazine in San Francisco between 1973 and 1976. Ms. Brown later became a critic for Art in America, a contributing editor for Images and Issues and the executive editor for Art Wire.
Although Ms. Brown majored in art during college, she eventually realized that her talents lay more in supporting the arts. Ms. Brown notably organized and ran numerous successful art fundraisers throughout her career, creating partnerships among museums, galleries, civic art commissions and business sponsors.
An alumnus of the University of California Berkeley, Ms. Brown received a Bachelor of Arts in 1968. She subsequently completed postgraduate coursework at the Central School of Arts and Design in London between 1968 and 1970. Aligned as a member of ArtTable, Ms. Brown was active on the organization's board of directors for the San Francisco chapter and served as the chairperson, national board director and a national vice president. She is also a member and former publicity chairperson of the Public Relations Society of America.
In 1986, Ms. Brown was the recipient of an Addy Award from the Advertising Federation. She later received an Eddy Award and a Compass Award from the Public Relations Society of America, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Art Table of Northern California and a Clarion Award from the Women in Communications. In 1999, the town of San Francisco celebrated Ms. Brown by christening Sylvia Brown Day in her honor. A celebrated Marquis listee, Ms. Brown has been included in close to a dozen editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Media and Communication and Who's Who of American Women.
