Having accrued more than 50 years of inimitable expertise in the fields of laboratory medicine and international health education, Dr. HopeKearns notably began her career as a medical technologist at the New England Deaconess Hospital in Brookline, Massachusetts. She subsequently held positions at the Cancer Research Institute in Brookline, Massachusetts and North Shore University Hospital/Cornell Medical Center in Manhasset, New York, between 1962 and 1984. Additionally, Dr. HopeKearns has been president and chief executive officer of HOPE for Healthcare Professionals International since 2004.

Splitting her time between the laboratory and the classroom, Dr. HopeKearns held her first academic appointment as Assistant Professor and Education Coordinator in the Department of Medical Technology in the School of Allied Health Professions at the State University of New York at Stony Brook (SUSB) from 1984 to 1990 where she taught medical laboratory courses, developed the Student Health International Program, and co-directed SUSB international health seminar programs in England, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Australia.

She was later recruited by California State University at Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) in 1990 to teach multidisciplinary courses in the Division of Health Sciences, School of Health and Human Services. She served as Graduate Coordinator in the Clinical and Health Sciences Program, director of the CSUDH multidisciplinary Study and Cultural Program for Health Professionals in England in 1991, and director of the CSUDH International Satellite Conference on Distance Education in 1999. Retiring from CSUDH in 2007 as a Professor Emeritus of Clinical and Health Science, Dr. HopeKearns subsequently taught doctoral dissertation courses and international public health in the Departments of Public Service Leadership and Public Administration at Capella University from 2007 until she retired from academe in 2017.

Throughout the course of her renowned career, Dr. HopeKearns was affiliated with several prestigious institutions in a variety of capacities. Dr. HopeKearns delivered numerous peer-reviewed presentations at national and international conferences within her field and disseminated many of her research findings to various scholarly journals. Dr. HopeKearns was actively engaged in a variety of activities with the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) for many years. Most notably, she served as an education consultant for the ASCP Global Institute's U.S. Presidents Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) cooperative agreement. The Institute's PEPFAR initiatives are designed to build capacity and strengthen laboratory and healthcare services in resource - limited countries to support HIV diagnosis, treatment, and surveillance. Established in 2003 by President George W. Bush, PEPFAR was subsequently funded by President Obama and has received additional support from the Trump administration.

Dr. HopeKearns worked alongside ASCP's staff, consultants, local health authorities, university faculty and administrators to help upgrade biomedical laboratory curricula from certificate to bachelor's degrees for the University of Jos in Nigeria, five universities in Ethiopia, and University of Rwanda in Kigali (formerly Kigali Health Institute). She helped develop a master's degree curriculum in Biomedical Laboratory Science for the University of Rwanda. As a consultant to the African Society for Laboratory Medicine, Dr. HopeKearns helped develop certificate and diploma curricula in Medical Laboratory Sciences for National Health Training Institutes in South Sudan.

Prior to embarking upon her professional journey, Dr. HopeKearns attended Lasell Junior College, from which she attained an Associate of Arts degree in 1961. She subsequently studied at the New York Institute of Technology, where she earned a Bachelor of Science, with honors, in 1976. Continuing her studies, she received a Master of Science from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1987, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Biomedical Laboratory Science from the University of Central Lancashire in England in 2004.

Outcomes of global significance from Dr. HopeKearns' doctoral research study " A Model For International Clinical/Biomedical Science Programs" (https://doi.org/10.1309/DDFYQDC3JDHHHHVV) served as a catalyst for the establishment of the ASCP Board of Registry Globalization Task Force in 2002 for which she served as Vice Chair, the development of the framework for a transatlantic student exchange program funded from 2003 to 2006 by European and American partner institutions and, in part, by a grant from the European Commission/United States Cooperation Program in Higher Education and Vocational Education and Training grant, and the establishment of the ASCP international certification program (ASCPi) for laboratory personnel in 2006. It is noteworthy that since its creation, in 2019 nearly14,000 ASCPi certificates were awarded to laboratory professionals by region of education from 100 countries worldwide (taken from ASCP Board of Certification 2019 Examination Statistics for ASCPi Credential).

Eminently qualified in her field, in 1990 Dr. HopeKearns was elected Fellow by the Royal Society of Arts in London, she received the Excellence in Education award from ASCP in 2003 and the ASCP Mastership award in 2008. Also in 2008 she joined the Clinical Laboratory Science Delegation to Russia in conjunction with the People to People Citizen Ambassador Program in Moscow and St. Petersburg. To support her career, Dr. HopeKearns has been active with several professional organizations including the American Society for Clinical Pathology, the Association for Schools of the Allied Health Professions, Transatlantic Health Science Consortium, California Association for Medical Laboratory Technology, American Public Health Association, Coalition for Allied Health Leadership, African Society for Laboratory Medicine, and American Association of University Women. Dr. HopeKearns' executive board experience to her credit include Walking with Angels, the North American Consortium of Nursing and Allied Health for International Cooperation, and Alpha Eta National Honor Society.

Since retiring in 2017, Dr. HopeKearns has been volunteering in her community at the Huntington Beach Central Library, the Huntington Beach Senior Center in Central Park, serves on the Board of Directors of the Huntington Beach Council on Aging (HBCOA) and is the Council's Travel Program Coordinator.

In 2019, Dr. HopeKearns was bestowed with the U.S. President's Volunteer Service Award by the Corporation for National and Community Service for her volunteer service commitment to her community and nation. Also, she was a recipient of the prestigious Stephen Shank Recognition of Teaching and Learning Excellence award at Capella University in 2012, 2014, and 2016, A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. HopeKearns was showcased in the 1999/2000 edition of Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare.
