Having held the distinguished title of a professor emerita of art at the University of North Texas since 1975, Dr. Gough enjoyed a wonderful career in education, which spanned more than 30 years. Early in her career, she taught elementary school-aged children at District 16 in Lucien, Oklahoma, the Denison School District in Denison, Texas, and Oklahoma City School District between 1941 and 1947. Dr. Gough was subsequently acquired by the University of North Texas in 1947 as an instructor, after which she advanced to the positions of an assistant, associate and full professor of ceramics over the next three decades.
She and her husband, Ray Gough, are considered pioneers in vusal arts in Denton for their many years of teaching and support. They have been aligned with the Ray and Georgia Gough Research Fund in Interiors, Fibers, Ceramics, Jewelry, Metal and Related Arts.
In addition to her full-time commitments in academia, Dr. Gough was active as the secretary of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts, as a craftsman and trustee for the American Crafts Council and as a U.S. delegate for the World Crafts Council. An expert in her field, she has contributed numerous articles to various professional art journals. Dr. Gough's artwork has also been featured in several one-woman shows, as well as at exhibitions at numerous national competitions. She was likewise the designer of the artwork at the Greater Denton Arts Council, which has been on display since 1985.
Affiliated with several local organizations, Dr. Gough was a member of the board of directors of the Greater Denton Arts Council for more than 10 years. She also founded the annual Materials: Hard + Soft in 1987, an exhibition which is recognized as one of the premier craft exhibitions in the country and is now in its 33rd year.
Born in Oklahoma City in 1920, Dr. Gough later attended Central State College in Oklahoma where she received a Bachelor of Science in 1941. She subsequently completed a Master of Science at North Texas State University in 1946. Dr. Gough completed her academic efforts with a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Oklahoma in 1962.
The recipient of numerous accolades, Ray and Georgia earned the Green Glory Award for Exceptional Service from the University of North Texas in 2004. She was also the recipient of several recognitions for her community service, including a Community Arts Recognition Award in 1995. The Georgia and Ray Gough Gallery at the Greater Denton Arts Council in Denton was also named in their honor in 2008 for their lasting contributions to the organization. A design and research room within the new art building at the University of North Texas was similarly named after them. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Gough has been highlighted in close to 20 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women.
