Leading a long and successful career as a demographer, researcher and educator, Dr. May has been aligned with Georgetown University since 2008 and has distinguished himself as a research professor at the George Mason University Schar School of Policy and Government on campus since 2020. He is also a senior fellow at the Population Institute in Washington, D.C. Dr. May formerly held faculty appointments at the Institut Haïtien de Statistique et d'Informatique in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, was a UN associate expert in demography and a high school teacher in Brussels during the 1970s. Dr. May's 45-year career notably includes international experience in demographic analysis, population projections, population policies, family planning, reproductive health and HIV/AIDS programs with specific expertise in the design, implementation and evaluation of population and reproductive health strategies and operations.
Some of Dr. May's key positions in Washington, D.C., have included 15 years as a senior and lead population scientist with the World Bank and as a senior associate and scientist at Futures Group International, which is a U.S. consulting firm specializing in demographic modeling and policy. He also worked for several international agencies, including the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population and the United States Agency for International Development. In more recent years, Dr. May excelled as a visiting scholar at the Population Reference Bureau in Washington, D.C., between 2013 and 2017.
During the course of his illustrious career, Dr. May found additional success as a speaker and lecturer at numerous conferences and was a presenter and keynote speaker in his field. Currently a member of the board of the Association of Alfred Sauvy in Paris since 2013, he is also an active member of the scientific advisory council for the Berlin Institute for Population and Development in Berlin since 2015 and for POPDEVINTER in Paris since 2016. A prolific author, Dr. May recently published "World Population Policies: Their Origin, Evolution, and Impact" through Springer in 2012, which received a Global Media Award for Best Book in Population from the Population Institute. He has authored and co-authored numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals and professional publications, has written editorials, blogs and other forms of media and has served as a peer reviewer for several books. In 2020, Dr. May became an editorial committee member for Population and Avenir in Paris.
Dr. May received a Bachelor of Arts in modern history, cum laude, in 1973 and a Master of Arts in demography in 1985 at the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium. He later acquired a Doctor of Philosophy in demography, summa cum laude, at the University of Paris-V in 1996. Aligned with several industry-related organizations both locally and abroad, Dr. May is currently a member of the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population, the Population Association of Pakistan, the Union for African Population Studies, the Association Internationale des Démographes de Langue Française, and, among others, the Population Reference Bureau.
Dr. May received an Andrew W. Mellon Foundation visiting scholarship for the Population Reference Bureau from 1991 to 1992. He was later the recipient of several awards, including numerous Spot Awards from the World Bank between 2000 and 2008 and a Chief Economist's Best Practice Award from the World Bank Africa Region in 2007. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. May has been featured in the fifth edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering and the 24th edition of Who's Who in the East.
