An acclaimed educator with the University of Queensland, Dr. Walsh has served as professor of dental science since 1999, and as the discipline lead for special needs dentistry. He has presented over 1200 invited lectures and courses across 35 countries. Dr Walsh has been the chief examiner of microbiology for the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons since 1999, and a member of the Australian Dental Association's national Infection Control Committee since 1997. He has been an external examiner for many universities in the Asia-Pacific region, and a grant assessor for national grant agencies in multiple countries. Dr. Walsh has helped to advance the technologies used for dental diagnosis and treatment, including fluorescence diagnostics for dental caries and endodontic infections, salivary diagnostics, dental plaque diagnostics, minimally invasive laser surgery, laser bleaching and laser-induced analgesia. He has also developed new dental materials for root canal treatment. He holds multiple patents in these technologies.
Dr. Walsh has an extensive history of leadership roles at the University of Queensland, including 10 years as the head of the School of Dentistry, where he has also been at various times Director of Clinics, Director of Research, Director of Undergraduate Studies and Curriculum Development, and Director of Clinical Placements, and held senior roles coordinating laser safety, workplace health and safety, and academic integrity. In the University of Queensland Faculty of Health Sciences he has also held leadership roles in teaching and learning, and in workplace health and safety, while at the senior university level, he has been an academic board standing committee member, and served on multiple senior committees for teaching and learning. In addition to his work with the University of Queensland, he has honed his knowledge through varying positions with the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, the Australian Dental Association Queensland branch, the Commonwealth Department of Veterans Affairs, and the Dental Board of Queensland, to name a few. Dr. Walsh retains his professional alignment with a plethora of organizations, including the Australian Association for Laser Dentistry, of which he is a founding member and the current President, the Australian Dental Association of which he is a former state branch president, the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Special Needs Dentistry of which is a former president, and the International Association for Dental Research for which he is a regional councilor.
A registered dental specialist in special needs dentistry, Dr. Walsh pursued an education at the University of Queensland School of Dentistry, obtaining a Bachelor of Dental Science in 1983, a Doctor of Philosophy in 1987 and a higher doctorate, the Doctor of Dental Science, in 1993. Subsequently, he undertook postdoctoral studies at the University of Pennsylvania, and was awarded fellowships from the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia, the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons, the International College of Dentists, the Pierre Fauchard Academy, the Academy of Dentistry International, and the International Academy of Dental-Facial Esthetics, and undertook executive education at Stanford University and Harvard University. A devoted advocate in the field, Dr. Walsh has contributed to those less fortunate through capacity building work in the Oceania region and in South-East Asia, and through 14 years of pro-bono clinical work caring for oncology patients.
Throughout his extensive career, Dr. Walsh has authored more than 1000 publications of various types, including 10 books, 15 book chapters, over 320 refereed scientific journal papers, 50 Australian Dental Association protocols and guidelines, and over 400 published technical reports and literature reviews, covering such topics as the microbiology and pathology of oral diseases and the applications of advanced technologies and biomaterials in dentistry. In light of his stellar body of work, he has been recognized many times, earning the Australian Award for University Teaching in 1998, the Alan Docking Award from the International Association for Dental Research in 1999, and the Distinguished Service Award from the Australian Dental Association in 2012. More recently, he was honored by being made as an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2018, and in 2019 he received the Research Higher Degree Excellence in Supervision Award from the University of Queensland's Faculty of Health and Behavioral Sciences. Looking toward the future, Dr. Walsh aims to continue advising and teaching students at the University of Queensland and offering his wealth of knowledge to the dental profession as a whole.
