Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Dr. Bowler became involved in her profession because she was inspired to conduct research and was excited to learn how to use mathematics to describe physical phenomena. She later received a Bachelor of Science in physics from the University of Nottingham, a Doctor of Philosophy in physics from the University of Surrey and a Master of Divinity from the Church Divinity School of the Pacific. Dr. Bowler was motivated to enter ministry later in her career because she believed that she was called to become a force for good in the world, grounded in religious faith.
Dr. Bowler found much success throughout her academic career at Iowa State University, beginning as an associate scientist at the Center for Nondestructive Evaluation. She subsequently served as an associate professor and an equity advisor for the College of Engineering before becoming appointed as a professor and the deputy director of the Center for Nondestructive Evaluation. In addition, Dr. Bowler became an ordained priest and serves as such at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul in the Episcopal Diocese of Iowa.

In the coming years, Dr. Bowler plans to depart from academia and transition into church leadership on a full-time basis.
