With nearly 55 years of experience to his credit, Surendra Poonamchand Shah has excelled as a presidential distinguished professor at the University of Texas at Arlington since 2019. Moreover, he has held the designation of Walter P. Murphy professor emeritus at Northwestern University since 2012. Prior to these appointments, he worked at Northwestern University in a number of positions, serving as the director of National Science Foundation-funded science and technology in the Center for Advanced Cement-Based Materials from 1990 to 2012, a professor of civil engineering from 1981 to 2012, and the Walter P. Murphy professor of civil engineering in the Robert R. McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science. Dr. Shah began his teaching career at the University of Illinois, flourishing as an assistant professor from 1966 to 1969, an associate professor from 1969 to 1973, a professor of civil engineering from 1973 to 1981 and the director of the graduate program in the department of materials engineering.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Shah pursued an education at the BVM Engineering College, earning a Bachelor of Engineering in 1959. He continued his academic efforts with a Master of Science at Lehigh University in 1960. Following these accomplishments, Dr. Shah concluded his studies at Cornell University in 1965, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy.
Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Dr. Shah has participated in numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. Renowned as a consultant for the United Nations as well as myriad government agencies and industries throughout the United States, France, Switzerland, China, Denmark and the Netherlands, he has contributed to multiple institutes of learning as a visiting professor, such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Delft University of Technology, the Technical University of Denmark, the LCPC, France, the University of Sydney and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Providing his wealth of knowledge to Turkey as a NATO visiting scientist in 1992, Dr. Shah subsequently held the posts of a distinguished visiting professor at the National University of Singapore in 1999, a visiting chair professor at the Technical University of Denmark in 2002 and a distinguished professor at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras since 2014.
Additionally, Dr. Shah has been active as an honorary professor at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Tongji University, Dalian Maritime University, Nanjing Tech University and Jinan University. He is a member of the Institute of Advanced Studies of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He found success with his written works as well, co-authoring "Fiber Reinforced Cement Composites" in 1992, "High Performance Concrete and Applications" in 1994, "Fracture Mechanics of Concrete" in 1995 and more than 500 articles published in professional journals. The editor of 20 books, he has also thrived as the editor-in-chief for Materials and Structures from 2001 to 2005 and the co-editor-in-chief for Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering since 2017. Recruited to the editorial boards for several international journals over the years, Dr. Shah held the role of the co-chair of the International Conference on Nanotechnology Applied to Construction Materials since 2012.
In addition to his primary vocation, Dr. Shah remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He was appointed as the chairman for the technical committees of the American Concrete Institute and the International Union of Laboratories and Experts in Construction Materials, Systems and Structures, for which he was prospered on the management advisory board He was also associated with the American Society of Civil Engineers as the past chairman of the technical committee, a member of executive committee, a member of the advisory board of Engineering Mechanics Division. He is a member of the committee on of research for concrete materials of the Transportation Research Board.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Shah has accrued several accolades throughout his impressive career. Dr. Shah is the only civil engineer to become a member of the National Academy of Engineering, National Academy of Inventors, the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the Indian National Academy of Engineering, the Academy of Athens and the Russian Academy of Engineering. He has twice received the Fulbright Lectureship Award and the Della Roy lectureship from the American Ceramic Society .He was recognized as an Honorary Member of the American Concrete Institute, and the International Union of Laboratories and Experts in Construction Materials, Systems and Structures, Accepting the Thompson Award from the American Society for Testing and Materials in 1983, Dr. Shah was presented with the Distinguished U.S. Visiting Scientist Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in 1989, the Swedish Concrete Award in 1993, the Engineering News Record Award of Newsmaker in 1995 and the ASCE Charles Penkow Award in 1997.
Honored among the 10 Most Influential Persons in the Concrete Industry by Concrete Construction in 2006, Dr. Shah was selected for inclusion in many editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who in the World. He was additionally celebrated by the American Concrete Institute with the Anderson Award, the Henry Crown Award and the Robert Philbo Award. Dr. Shah was lauded by the International Union of Laboratories and Experts in Construction Materials, Systems and Structures with a Gold Medal in 1980 and an international conference on fiber reinforced concrete in his honor in 2004.
Inspired by his desire to better society, Dr. Shah cites his development of new materials for infrastructure as the focus of his intellectual curiosity. He attributes his success to the success of his more than 200 graduate students, most of whom now occupy important positions in their industries. Looking toward the future, Dr. Shah hopes to continue learning new things while collaborating with faculty and students around the globe to develop innovative and sustainable new materials for infrastructure across multiple disciplines.
