Having accrued more than 40 years of inimitable expertise in the field of education, Ms. Harrison garnered a laudable reputation as an instructor at Dartmouth College from 1995 until her retirement in 2011. A beloved poet as well as an educator, she began her career as a teacher of English at the Beaver School of Brookline, Massachusetts, in 1968. She worked for three years to inspire her students through the writing and parodies of Beowulf, Chaucer and Shakespeare. Ms. Harrison later excelled in academia, teaching English Literature and Creative Writing at the University System of New Hampshire and Dartmouth College as an adjunct faculty member until retiring in 2011.
Throughout her career, Ms. Harrison's love of the English language led her to become a well-known, award-winning poet and writer. She has authored numerous poems and essays, which have been published in various literary journals and magazines such as the Beloit Poetry Journal, the Green Mountains Review and Yankee Magazine, as well as six poetry collections. Her books of poetry include "Stereopticon" in 2004, "Okie Chronicles" in 2005, "Out of Silence" in 2009, "What to Make of It" in 2012 and "Glory Bush and Green Banana" in 2017. Her newest poetry book, "WHIRLIGIG," will be released in 2021. Furthermore, Ms. Harrison has contributed two chapbooks, "Pamela Harrison Greatest Hits" in 2002 and "Noah's Daughter" in 1988, which was notably a Panhandler Chapbook Competition winner through the University of West Florida.
Ms. Harrison has had the good fortune of reading her poems before the Library of Congress. She has also spoken often at local libraries, including at the Norman Williams Public Library in Woodstock, Vermont, and the Kellogg Hubbard Public Library in Montpelier, Vermont, and before various book clubs and area beach and tennis clubs to celebrate her books. In 2015, Ms. Harrison was chosen among her peers to give craft lectures throughout Vermont during the spring and summer months, which were supported by the Vermont Humanities Council, Burlington City Arts, MMCTV, and SunDogPoetry.org.
To prepare for her career, Ms. Harrison acquired a Bachelor of Art in English literature at Smith College in 1968. She later attained a Master of Fine Art in poetry at Vermont College in 1983. Among her professional memberships, Ms. Harrison is aligned with Our Court. She notably served as the president of the board between 1993 and 1994.
Ms. Harrison received a fellowship from the MacDowell Colony and the Vermont Studio Center. In honor of her poetry work, she received the PEN Northern New England Discovery Poet Award in 2002. A celebrated Marquis listee, Ms. Harrison has been showcased in the third edition of Who's Who in Entertainment and the 25th edition of Who's Who in the East.
