Shortly after graduating from medical college, Dr. Powell, an experienced pathologist and health facility administrator, established Biomed Labs in 1969. He proceeded to serve in positions of high authority with Biomedical Reference Labs, Roche Biomedical Laboratories and Laboratory Corporation of America Holdings, now known as LabCorp, for nearly two decades. In 1982, he took on added responsibility with Roche Biomedical Laboratories as its president and CEO between 1982 and 1995, after which he worked in the same capacity for LabCorp for two years. Dr. Powell contributed for the remainder of his renowned career as the chief executive officer of TriPath Imaging before retiring in 2000. Headquartered in Burlington, North Carolina, the company has garnered a laudable reputation for its cutting-edge solutions in advancing the clinical management of cancer.
As a seasoned researcher, Dr. Powell has contributed numerous scholarly articles in various peer-reviewed journals throughout his career. Although he no longer works full-time, he has remained active as a consultant in his field since 2005, and holds several prestigious roles within his community. Dr. Powell has found success as a trustee for Elon University in North Carolina since 1979 and has been a board director for the Alamance Community Foundation in Burlington since 1991, Participate in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, since 2010 and the Trust Company of the South, which has three locations across North Carolina, since 2013. He is also a former board director for North Carolina Railroad, having served between 2011 and 2013.
While coming of age, Dr. Powell's father founded a biotechnology company, which inspired him to become involved in clinical laboratory science while attending medical school. Pursuing his education at the Virginia Military Institute, he received a Bachelor of Arts in 1960, and subsequently matriculated at Duke University, where he attained a Doctor of Medicine in 1964. Additional educational pursuits to his credit include an internship at Duke University Medical Center and residency work at Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York and Englewood Hospital in New Jersey. Following the conclusion of his academic efforts, Dr. Powell enlisted in the U.S. Army as a major in the medical corps from 1969 until 1972. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Pathology and holds a medical license in the state of North Carolina.
Outside of his professional circles, Dr. Powell is active as a member of the Alamance Country Club. He is a passionate participant in tennis, and enjoys learning about U.S. military history.
