Dr. Stephen Bundy Graves has earned the distinguished title of Professor Emeritus at the University of South Florida.

Now retired after more than three decades in education, Dr. Graves has earned the distinguished title of Professor Emeritus at the University of South Florida. Appointed to his role in 1996, he taught and chaired childhood education and literacy studies in the college of education. He formerly held similar positions at the University of Memphis, the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Manchester College in Oxford, England, and the University of South Carolina. He also briefly worked for Kershaw County Schools in Elgin, South Carolina, as a kindergarten teacher between 1972 and 1974. Additionally, Dr. Graves found success as the director of the Clemson Child Development Center and the Anderson Hospital Child Development Center in South Carolina between 1975 and 1983.
Dr. Graves held numerous prestigious positions outside the classroom as well. In 1991, he was selected to serve as a research associate with the Office of Parent Development International at Arizona State University. Shortly thereafter, he became a leader of the U.S. Delegation to Poland and Russia and was the early childhood education chairperson of the U.S.-China Joint Conference on Education during 1992. Other roles to Dr. Graves' credit have included representing the U.S. Early Childhood Special Education Delegation to Hungary, Russia and the Czech Republic as a co-leader and the Joint Conference on Early Childhood Education in Beijing as a member.
A prolific and gifted writer, Dr. Graves co-authored two books; "Empowering At-Risk Families During the Early Childhood Years" published in 1993, and "Young Children: An Introduction to Early Childhood Education" in 1996. He also contributed numerous scholarly articles to peer reviewed journals, including "Lessons from Erickson: A Look at Autonomy Across the Lifespan," which he co-authored with his wife, Elizabeth Larkin, in the Journal of Intergenerational Relationships. The article was Dr. Graves' most downloaded publication. During the course of his career, he also helped write several position papers alongside several top professionals in his field, which he recalls as an immense privilege.
Following the example of his father, who worked as a teacher and principal, Dr. Graves held several jobs while attending junior high and high school, including at a summer camp. Discovering a great passion for working with children and observing how curious and eager they were to learn, he decided to become an educator himself. After acquiring a Bachelor of Arts at Appalachian State University in 1972, Dr. Graves pursued additional studies, attaining both a Master of Education in 1974 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1986 at the University of South Carolina.
Dr. Graves received a fellowship from the State Education Department of South Carolina in 1972. Once he began teaching, he was recognized as a finalist for the Ellen Gregg Ingalls Excellence in Teaching Award from the UAB in 1994. He also won the Outstanding Professor Award from the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee in 2004 and was the recipient of a Service Award from the South Carolina Early Childhood Association in 2008. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Graves has been cited in the 65th edition of Who's Who in America and the fourth edition of Who's Who in American Education.
To support his professional endeavors, Dr. Graves has maintained his alignment with several pertinent organizations.
