Dr Lonsdale graduated from the Royal Veterinary College, University of London in 1972. And thus began a varied career in veterinary medicine commencing as a volunteer in Nairobi, Kenya followed by work in farm animal, zoo animal and small animal private practice in the United Kingdom. In 1980 he emigrated to Australia and established a group of mixed animal veterinary clinics in Western Sydney.
In the early years Dr Lonsdale adhered to conventional veterinary teaching and practice. However by the late 1980s his career took a different turn. Together with veterinary colleagues, dubbed the Raw Meaty Bones Lobby, a new perception, a new set of values took hold. It became clear to Dr Lonsdale that the modern fashion of feeding dogs and cats industrial, highly processed products was in fact the reason a majority of domestic carnivores suffer from putrid breath and a host of diet related diseases. By changing his patients' diet from packaged food to a diet of raw meaty bones puppies and kittens gained a new vitality. Old dogs and cats gained a new lease on life.
Dr Lonsdale acknowledges that he was slow to recognize the fundamental health implications of feeding pets from the packet and can. However, with enlightenment came a commitment. Since 1992 Dr Lonsdale has combined clinical work with writing and media appearances in his campaign for improved pet nutrition and more insightful veterinary teaching.
Highlights of his career are many. In 1993 the Postgraduate Foundation in Veterinary Science at the University of Sydney commissioned him to write the definitive paper on dog and cat dental disease prevention: Preventative Dentistry. In 1994 the Journal of Veterinary Dentistry provided pride of place for his landmark publication Cybernetic Hypothesis of Periodontal Disease in Mammalian Carnivores. Dr Lonsdale's book Raw Meaty Bones: Promote Health was published to rave reviews in 2001.The first twelve chapters identify the systemic problems with conventional veterinary medicine. Chapters thirteen and fourteen provide a prescription for pet health with likely flow on benefits for human health and medical science.
In recommending Dr Lonsdale for the College Prize of the Australian College of Veterinary Science, Dr Douglas Bryden wrote: 'Through his work as a veterinary practitioner Dr Lonsdale has identified a problem, researched the aetiology and the pathogenesis, introduced therapeutic and preventive procedures, and addressed, head on, what he saw to be a moral issue for the profession. In short he has changed a paradigm and guided his profession in a more thoughtful and proper course of action.'
