Mr. Wethe, a respected civil engineer and planner who was employed by the U.S. Coast Guard, retired in 2005 after two decades of excellence in his role. The former lieutenant, who enlisted in the military in 1967, proudly served his country for four years before spending another 18 years in the Reserves, retiring in 1971 as a commander. During Mr. Wethe's professional career with the Coast Guard, he utilized the experience he gained while in the Reserves to plan attainable emergency responses. He was also instrumental in developing a computer program to help with such planning, which was utilized well after he retired.
During the latter part of his career with the Coast Guard, Mr. Wethe was the owner of his own environmental consulting business, Wethe Engineering Associates, between 1983 and 1985. In previous years, he was a civil engineering instructor at Tufts University in Massachusetts from 1966 until 1967. He was subsequently hired as a research engineer by the college of marine studies at the University of Delaware in Lewes. Aligned with the university for more than a decade, Mr. Wethe managed two research support labs, where he often collaborated with faculty members on their research projects, which involved acquiring and processing samples that were collected both offshore and on the coast.
In retirement, Mr. Wethe volunteers his time by performing tax preparations for individuals through the American Association of Retired Persons. He is also a facilitator for an investment discussion group at the West Senior Center where he is an active member. A dedicated civic advocate, Mr. Wethe is also aligned with his local church as a parishioner.
An alumnus of Brown University, Mr. Wethe received a Bachelor of Science in engineering in 1964. He subsequently attained a Master of Science in civil engineering at Tufts University in 1967, the same year he joined the U.S. Coast Guard. More than a decade hence, he received a Master of Arts in business management at Central Michigan University in 1981. Eminently qualified in his field, Mr. Wethe is a registered professional engineer.
To remain aware of developments effecting his field, Mr. Wethe has been a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers. In respect to his military career, he is a life member of the Reserve Officers Association. A celebrated Marquis listee, Mr. Wethe has been featured in the 24th edition of Who's Who in the East.
