Having accrued nearly three decades of expertise in his chosen field, Dr. Hammett garnered a reputation as a research psychologist before retiring from the profession in 1993. During his career, he enjoyed 20 years in private practice in clinical psychology between 1972 and 1992. He also held positions at O'Connor Hospital in San Jose, California, the VA Treatment Center for Children in Richmond, Virginia, and the Children's Psychiatric Hospital Center in Butner, North Carolina. Additionally, Dr. Hammett contributed for many years in the classroom at the Western Graduate School of Psychology as an instructor of psychology and with Virginia Commonwealth University as an assistant professor of child psychology.
Drawing great satisfaction from his career, Dr. Hammett often relished in working with clients to help them resolve their issues. He found the best results in working with alcoholics, which often involved using transactional analysis and gestalt therapy to help them recover successfully. During the course of his career, he also had the opportunity to volunteer for a research project at the Mental Research Institute in Palo Alto, conducting an eight-year research project on family recovery from alcoholism, which resulted in writing of a book. Moreover, Dr. Hammett notably served as the vice president of the board of directors at the Institute from 1982 to 1983 and later as the president of the board between 1983 and 1985 and as the treasurer from 1990 until 1992.
An avid civic advocate since 1969, Dr. Hammett served as a first lieutenant in the Civil Air Patrol. He was also involved with the local John B. Cary School Parent Teacher Association in Richmond, Virginia, and on the board of trustees of the National Parks and Conservation Association. Likewise, he was a scoutmaster of the Boy Scouts of America, where he was honored with the title of an Eagle Scout. Dr. Hammett has served as a volunteer with the Bay Area Action and Peninsula Conservation Center in Palo Alto since 1983 and as a member of the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco since 1987.
Dr. Hammett pursued a formal education at Stanford University where he received a Bachelor of Science in 1957. He later attained a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of North Carolina in 1969, followed by advanced coursework at the Gestalt Therapy Center of San Diego. Dr. Hammett is a licensed psychologist in the state of California.
Dr. Hammett is a certified clinical member of the International Transactional Analysis Association. Aligned with numerous other professional organizations in support of his career, he is also a member of the American Psychological Association, the American Group Psychotherapy Association, the Association of Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback, the Biofeedback Society of California and the California Psychological Association. During Dr. Hammett's professional career, he received a grant for his studies from the National Institute of Mental Health. He was also a co-recipient with his wife, Ruth Finstrom Hammett, of the Avenidas Lifetime Achievement Award in Palo Alto in 2013.
