A respected attorney in the state of California, Mr. Thomson has been aligned with Brooks Kushman PC in Los Angeles since 2009. Named as the attorney-in-charge in 2013, he represents clients in matters of patent, trademark, copyright, trade secret and licensing. Bringing with him more than 50 years of expertise, he is best known for his skills in intellectual property litigation. Often serving on behalf of the chemical, pharmaceutical, biotech, and other similar industries, both in jury and court trials, and before the International Trade Commission, Mr. Thomson's clients include both U.S. and international organizations, as well as start-up companies and entrepreneurs.
As an active member of his local community, Mr. Thomson enjoyed two years as the vice-mayor of Pasadena, California. He subsequently became mayor in 1988 where he was instrumental in putting into place what is now called "Old Pasadena," a business and arts district. Mr. Thomson was also a member of the town's city council for well over a decade between 1981 and 1997.
Among his other civic involvement, Mr. Thomson is a former president of the Los Angeles county division of the League of California Cities, where he assisted in resolving a handful of issues, including transportation. He also played a part in bringing various sporting events to Pasadena, including the Super Bowl on two occasions and the Summer Olympics. He has also been a longstanding member of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association since 1974, is a former member of the board of trustees of Pasadena City College and a past president of the Pasadena Educational Foundation. Additionally, Mr. Thomson serves as the president of the board of trustees of the Pasadena Museum of History where he has been a board member since 2011 and has served on several committees.
Mr. Thomson, who followed his father's passion as a civil engineer, studied a similar field, earning a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering at Bucknell University in 1957. Continuing his education, he received a Doctor of Jurisprudence at Georgetown University in 1963 so that he could pursue a career focused on patent law. He also notably attained the ranks of a lieutenant and captain in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, serving active duty in Germany. Mr. Thomson has been admitted to practice law by the Virginia, Ohio, and California Bar Associations, the U.S. District Courts of California, the U.S. District Court of Ohio, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and the Supreme Court of the United States.
Among his professional memberships, Mr. Thomson is active with the American Bar Association, the California Bar Association and the Los Angeles County Bar Association. He is also a member and counselor of the Judge Paul R. Michel Intellectual Property American Inn of Court, which focuses on the field of intellectual property. Mr. Thomson received an Arts Merit Award from the Pasadena Committee Arts Center. A celebrated Marquis listee, he has been showcased in the 22nd and 23rd editions of Who's Who in the West.
