Having accrued more than 40 years of inimitable expertise in education, Ms. Ward enjoyed a long and successful career employed with the Saint Louis Public School. Hired as a reading instructor in 1950, she later transitioned into the capacity of a middle school counselor. Retiring in 1990, she devoted a subsequent seven years to the classroom as a part-time substitute teacher in Maplewood-Richmond Heights. Today, Ms. Ward contributes as a researcher in African American history in Richmond Heights.
Prolifically active in the field during her tenure in education, Ms. Ward simultaneously worked as a field representative for Tucker Business College in Saint Louis between 1950 and 1966. Owned by her mother-in-law, it was the oldest African American business school in the U.S., located just west of the Mississippi. The school was in operation from 1921 and until her death in 1966. Ms. Ward also taught as an adjunct faculty member at Harris Stowe State College in Saint Louis in 1974, 1984 and 1990. Additionally, she was affiliated with Mirrium Shops for 20 years, raising funds to support special education students.
Passionate about public service, Ms. Ward has been involved with the Young Women's Christian Association, as well as the Urban League Guild. She notably received a 25-Year Pin in recognition of her years of service to the Guild. Ms. Ward also volunteered for many years as a civil rights advocate, during which she assisted young women in realizing their ambitions by awarding scholarships to encourage seniors to return to high school.
Ms. Ward initially studied at Stowe Teachers College, receiving a bachelor's degree in 1950. She later earned a Master of Arts at Washington University in 1958 and completed postgraduate coursework at Webster University. Ms. Ward concluded her academic efforts in 1973, after which she graduated from the University of Missouri.
Since embarking upon her career path, Ms. Ward has become involved with several pertinent organizations, including the Saint Louis Personnel and Guidance Association as a member and past president-elect and the Saint Louis School Counselors Association as a past president and 1990 Service Award recipient. She has also served in various capacities as a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the Congress of Racial Equality, the Coalition 100 Black Women and, among other organizations, the National Council of Negro Women as an associate member. Additionally, Ms. Ward is affiliated with Alpha Kappa Alpha. A 72-year member of the honor society, she was recognized as a pearl in February 2020, due to her 65 years of continued service to the greater metropolitan area of Saint Louis, its surrounding counties and the metro east.
Ms. Ward's many celebrated accomplishments have included receiving a Distinguished Service Award from Iota Phi Lambda, an award from the National Board for Certified Counselors and a Distinguished Alumnae Award and President's Award from Harris Stowe State College. Moreover, she was named as a Top Ladies of Distinction Sunday School Scholar by the Washington Metro AMEZ Church. A celebrated Marquis listee, Ms. Ward has been featured in several editions of Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the Midwest, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women.
