Recently retired, Dr. McCreery was a consulting research scientist for more than 8 years in the department of mechanical engineering at Idaho State University until 2016. During those years, he served in the same capacity for the Idaho National Laboratory between 2008 and 2013 after having contributed 35 years at the institution as a senior research scientist. Dr. McCreery also held positions as a scientist for Lockheed Research Laboratory and as a mechanical engineer for Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and for Applied Technology Inc. in years prior.
Dr. McCreery has specialized in experimental and analytical research on thermal and fluid flow aspects of nuclear reactor safety throughout his career at the Idaho National Laboratory. He has authored numerous scholarly articles on nuclear reaction safety, as well as fluid dynamics in scientific journals and additionally served as a reviewer for several of these journals. Among his civic interests, Dr. McCreery has been active with the National Ski Patrol at the Grand Targhee Ski Resort since 1975 as a ski patroller. He is also an avid photographer who has participated in many exhibits at the Teron Art Gallery in Driggs, Idaho, where he sells his mostly landscape photographs.
Born in Palo Alto, California, and raised in Silicon Valley, Dr. McCreery came of age surrounded by several of his friends' fathers, who were often engineers and scientists in their own right. Once he graduated from high school, he pursued an education at San Jose State University. He received both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in mechanical engineering in 1966 and 1968, respectively. Continuing his studies years later, Dr. McCreery acquired a Doctor of Philosophy in chemical engineering at the University California at Santa Barbara in 1988.
To support his illustrious career, Dr. McCreery was an active and respected member of the American Nuclear Society. He was also a member of Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honorary Society. Recognized in 1967 and 1968 as a Dean's scholar at San Jose State University, Dr. McCreery has also since become a celebrated Marquis listee who has been featured in the 63rd edition of Who's Who in America and the 23rd and 24th editions of Who's Who in the West.
