As a child, Ms. Balderson watched her parents care for her oldest brother who was ill. Touched by the level of commitment and teamwork she observed in their loving caregiving and their faith in God, she was drawn to a career in nursing, and earned a diploma from St. Mary's Hospital, Huntington, West Virginia, in 1974. In 1989, Ms. Balderson graduated from West Virginia University with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
During college she worked for Dr. M. Homer Cummings, Jr. until graduating from nursing school and then took a staff nurse position at Tinken Mercy Hospital in Canton, OH. Ms. Balderson then moved to Hershey, PA and began her career as a nurse in the open heart intensive care unit at the Hershey Medical Center and completed her Critical Care nursing course through Penn State University.
Returning to her hometown in Parkersburg, WV in 1977, she enjoyed an expansive career at St. Joseph's Hospital. She began as the assistant director of nursing for emergency services, then took and developed the role of trauma nurse coordinator before becoming the hospital's administrative director of Emergency and Trauma Services. In 1992 she became the Administrative Director of Physician Services and in 1995 started her own consulting service, Health Age Consulting Service until retiring in 2014.
Ms. Balderson is a registered nurse in West Virginia and formerly certified in advanced cardiac life support, basic life support, and critical care instructor. Ms. Balderson was a founding member of the West Virginia State Trauma Nurse Coordinators, founding member of the Trauma Coordinator Core Course and served as the first course Director (which is now renamed as the Trauma Program Managers Course) sponsored by the American Trauma Society, and served as National Chair of the Trauma Coordinator Council.
Ms. Balderson has served as a member of various boards of directors; America Trauma Society, WV Southern Medical Service Region V, Parkersburg Area Community Foundation, Parkersburg Country Club and Trinity United Methodist Church.
Following her retirement from nursing, her beloved husband Carl passed away in 2015, and Ms. Balderson took over his business that he started in 1991, Carl's Pawn Shop, Inc. and continues to run a thriving business.
