Following three years as a sports editor at the News Chief, a daily newspaper in Winter Haven, Florida, he was hired as a sports cartoonist at the Tampa Times-Tribune in 1967. He subsequently worked as an editorial cartoonist for the Nashville Banner before serving in the same capacity for The Florida Times-Union in Jacksonville. A major daily newspaper recognized as the oldest in the state. He remained in position for 30 years until his retirement in 2010.
Renowned for his cartoons, Mr. Gamble's works have become nationally syndicated, appearing with such organizations as King Features in New York City, the world's leading distributor of comics, columns, editorial comics and more. They have also been published nationally in such popular publications as The New York Times, The Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times, as well as globally in the LeMonde in France, the Der Spiegel in Germany, the Independent in England and other papers across Japan, Ireland and other countries. Additionally, Mr. Gamble's cartoons have been displayed at the Texas Depository in Dallas, at the Presidential Museums of Ford, Carter, Nixon, Reagan and Bush Sr., as well as in several books, including "A Peek at the Great Society" in 1965, "A Cartoon History of the Reagan Years" in 1988, "A Cartoon History of United States Foreign Policy" in 1991, "You Get Two for the Price of One" in 1995 and, more recently, "Why I Love Millie!" in 2017. Throughout the course of his, Mr. Gamble has notably donated over 8,000 of his cartoons, which have been distributed to the University of Tennessee and the University of Northern Florida.
A tireless advocate for education, Mr. Gamble has been an honorary trustee of Walters State Community College in Morristown, TN since 1989. He served as a trustee for Morristown College, an African-American school founded in 1881 by his great grandfather Judson S. Hill. The school merged with Knoxville College in 1989 and closed in 1994 Morristown College is listed in the National Registry of History. He is also as a trustee of the Gamble Memorial Funds since 1989. He formerly served on the college's board of trustees between 1987 and 1989. To support his career, Mr. Gamble is a member of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists. Formed in 1957, he is among just 300 other members throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico.
Following the example of many in his own family, which has long been involved in publishing, Mr. Gamble began drawing when he was very young. In fact, his brother started his own newspaper in their neighborhood called The Twins Report, which he sold for two cents per issue. His father was a successful politician, while his mother worked as a newspaper columnist. In college, Mr. Gamble received a Bachelor of Arts in political science at the University of South Florida in 1970. Shortly thereafter, he attended postgraduate school in his home state at the University of Tennessee between 1971 and 1972.
Recognized for his talents, Mr. Gamble was invited to a luncheon at the White House by President Reagan in 1988, where the president showed him the collection of cartoons he had saved of his. He was also the cartoonist representative at Pope John Paul's address to the nation's communication leaders in Los Angeles that same year. As a testament to his success and longevity, Mr. Gamble received a Dragon Slayer Award from the United Industrial Council and a George Washington Award from the Freedom Foundation. He also received a Wilbur Award for one of his Christmas cartoons from the Religious Public Relations Council, two Sunshine State Awards for Best Editorial Cartoon from the Florida Society of Professional Journalists, two Best Cartoons Awards from the Florida Press Association and a Citation for Excellence from the Overseas Press Club. A celebrated Marquis listee, he has been cited in the second and third editions of Who's Who in Entertainment.
He has been married to Saundra Lancaster, a former school teacher, for 56 years.
