In the early 1970s, Dr. Whitehurst began his career as a second lieutenant in the United States Army. Over the years, he served his country in a variety of roles, including as a medical consultant, a nuclear accident incident & control team consultant and a task force flight surgeon. Additionally, Dr. Whitehurst gained valuable expertise in the field in research and development for the U.S. Army Aeronautical Research Laboratory, as a division surgeon for the U.S. Army 101st Airborne at Fort Campbell, a chief of hospital services and Chief of the Medical Staff for US Air Force Hospitals twice, an MTF Commander four times (twice for the US Army and twice for the US Air Force), and a family physician with the Culpeper Regional Health System, including a visiting assistant professorship with the University of Virginia and Chairman of the Department of Medicine of Culpeper Regional Hospital for 3 years.
Currently, Dr. Whitehurst excels as a senior consultant of family and aviation medicine for the U.S. Space Force and as a civilian family physician and flight surgeon for the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Space Force. An expert in his field, he initially earned a Bachelor of Science in nuclear engineering from the University of Virginia in 1970. Four years later, Dr. Whitehurst received a Doctor of Medicine from the Medical College of Virginia Commonwealth University.
Subsequently, Dr. Whitehurst completed a residency in family medicine at Fort Bragg. In order to remain aware of changes in the field, he is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians.
As the task force surgeon for Operation Northern Leap, the world's first transatlantic flight, he was awarded the Air Medal by the Vice Chief of Staff of the US. Army. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal six times, twice by the U.S Army and four times by the U.S. Air Force. His highest military decoration was the award of the Legion of Merit in September 1999 after completion of four years as Commander of the 86th Medical Group, 86th Airlift Wing, USAFE. He was also presented with the Army Achievement Medal while Chief of Plans, Operations and Training for the 394th Station Hospital (500 Bed), USAR.
Dr. Whitehurst intends to continue working with the U.S. Space Force for the remainder of his career.
