He previously worked as a systems engineer for the space division of General Electric Company from 1976 until 1981, and began in the field as a scientific data analyst for the Computer Sciences Corporation from 1974 to 1976. Outside of his primary career endeavors, Dr. Parks served as an adjunct professor of physics and mathematics at Germanna Community College between 1998 and 2003, and a lecturer in mathematics at the University of Mary Washington.
Prior to embarking upon his professional journey, Dr. Parks attended Marshall University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics and chemistry. Following this accomplishment, he matriculated at Pennsylvania State University, from which he earned a Master of Science in astronomy and physics from Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Parks concluded his academic efforts in 1975, receiving a Doctor of Philosophy in astronomy and physics in 1975.
Well regarded as a prolific author and inventor, Dr. Parks holds several patents in his field, and has contributed many articles to various journals, as well as chapters to books. For his technical endeavors, he received the Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Medal from the Department of Defense. He has attributed his professional successes to his parents, William and Pauline, and his wife, Firelei. In addition, Dr. Parks has benefited from the mentorship of such colleagues as Dr. Doug Sampson, Dr. Yakir Aharonov, Dr. Jeff Tollaksen, Dr. Jeff Solka and Dr. Steve Lipscomb.
