Dr. Kim is a board-certified cornea specialist with more than 15 years of excellence in complex ophthalmic surgeries, including corneal transplants, LASlK and cataract surgery. He earned a Bachelor of Science in biological sciences from the University of California at Irvine in 1995, and graduated from Georgetown University in 1998 with a Master of Science in physiology and biophysics. Ready to pursue medicine, but unsure of his intended specialty, he took a year away from academia to work with a nonprofit medical organization in Togo, West Africa. Under the guidance of an ophthalmologist in the program, Dr. Kim realized the possibilities for life-changing patient interventions available through the discipline.
In 2002, Dr. Kim graduated, cum laude, with a Doctor of Medicine from Creighton University School of Medicine, where he was on the Medical Dean's List and having earned scholarships and membership within the honorable society of Alpha Omega Alpha for his academic excellence. Before entering practice, he completed a preliminary year in internal medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago through 2003, and a residency in ophthalmology at Loyola University Medical Center until 2006. Dr. Kim pursued a prestigious one-year fellowship in cornea, external disease and refractive surgery at the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute of University of California at Irvine before joining the Terry & Kim Eye Institute in 2007.
Dr. Kim's practice includes cutting-edge Wavefront LASIK vision correction surgery as well as specialized glaucoma management therapies, macular degeneration management and corneal transplantation. He attributes his success to his focus on his patients and dedication to improving their quality of life by providing them with their best possible vision. Constantly refining his practice, Dr. Kim stays on the front lines of new innovations in surgical technique, and has performed both types of endothelial transplantation, Descemet Stripping Endothelial Keratoplasty (DSEK) and Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty (DMEK), among other innovative techniques. As an advocate for his specialty, he is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive surgery, the Corneal Society, among others, and was named to the Chrysalis Program of the American Academy of Asthma, Allergy and Immunology.
