Ms. Schmidt is renowned as a board-certified licensed clinical professional counselor operating out of a private practice, specializing in treating victims of trauma, depression and post-trauma stress disorder. A graduate of the District of Columbia Teachers College, she obtained a Bachelor of Science in early childhood education. In the late 1980s, Ms. Schmidt pursued further professional development in business management, earning a Bachelor of Science in business from the University of Maryland in 1986 and a continuing education certificate in accounting at Prince George's Community College in 1992.
Subsequently, Ms. Schmidt was advised that her background presented her with unique opportunities to support patients in a mental health setting, she considered acquiring a master's degree in counseling. In 1997, she graduated with a Master of Education in counseling education from Howard University. After obtaining her master's degree in counseling, she left the classroom and worked as a school counselor in the District of Columbia Public Schools until she retired in 2006. After retiring, she completed the requirements to become a license clinical professional counselor and worked in community settings in Maryland and the District of Columbia. Ms. Schmidt treated patients in individual practice in 2012, while also providing community therapeutic services to area churches and clients living in the foster care system as a part of Safe Harbor Christian Counseling and Independent Psychiatric Services.
From 2012 until 2015, Ms. Schmidt was active as a therapist for Urban Behavioral Associates, PA, directly serving a patient population with significant trauma history from physical and sexual abuse, incarceration and substance use disorders, in addition to coordinating care and treatment plans with other providers. Since 2015, she has been focused on her individual practice, which offers adult patients a cutting-edge range of treatment modalities, including art therapy, mindfulness and cognitive behavioral therapy. She is currently completing certification and training in EMDR therapy as a part of her ongoing commitment to helping patients with trauma. Ms. Schmidt has further flourished as a volunteer with Saint John Baptist Church and Pro Bono Counseling.
