In addition, he was the rheumatology fellowship program director, and has notably trained over 100 fellows to date. Dr. West formerly contributed for nearly 15 years in the field as the chief of rheumatology and as the fellowship program director at the Fitzsimmons Army Medical Center between 1981 and 1995 and was a consultant in rheumatology for the U.S. Army Surgeon General from 1991 until 1994. Additionally, he served for 23 years in the U.S. Army, having been commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1972 and advancing to the rank of a colonel before retiring in 1995.
On campus, Dr. West studies the pathophysiology and treatment of neuropsychiatric lupus, as well as metabolic bone disease. As a seasoned researcher, he has been involved in several clinical trials. Dr. West has also written numerous articles for scholarly journals, and has remained active as a reviewer for Arthritis and Rheumatology since 1995. He was the Deputy Editor for the year 1995. What's more, he is a member of the American Medical Association and the Rocky Mountain Rheumatism Society. Dr. West is a master of the American College of Rheumatology and a master of the American College of Physicians.
After graduating from the U.S. Military Academy in 1972, Dr. West received a Doctor of Medicine at Emory University in 1976. He subsequently undertook an internship and residency between 1976 and 1979 at the Fitzsimons Army Medical Center, where he was the chief resident in 1979. Dr. West also completed a fellowship in rheumatology at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center from 1979 until 1981. Eminently qualified in his field, he is board certified in internal medicine and rheumatology.
Dr. West has been the recipient of several awards for his devotion to the field of medicine, including the Philip Hench Award from the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States in 1983, the Laureate Award from the American College of Physicians in 1995, the Top Clinician Award from the University of Colorado Hospital in 2008 and the Distinguished Clinical Scholar Award and the Distinguished Fellowship Program Director Award from the American College of Rheumatology in 2010 and 2016, respectively. Dr. West has been recognized as a Top Doctor in Denver for many years.
