Now semi-retired, in 1986 Dr. Bernstein was a co-founding partner of Counseling Psychologists and Associates in Kansas City and had a successful private practice for many years. Prior roles include Associate Psychologist with Counseling and Human Development Services from 1985 to 1986 and Psychotherapist with University of Missouri Community Counseling Center from 1983 to 1985. She has been and still is very active in the Kansas City community. Outside of her private practice, Dr. Bernstein has developed and presented programs on Enhanced Self-Esteem, Stress Management, Time Management, Life Changes and Passages, and The Healthy Family System. She has been interviewed on TV and radio. She has served as a Board of Director of many boards: Avila University Board of Counselors; University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Education Alumni Association Board; Jewish Vocational Services Board; Genesis School Board; Friendship House Advisory Board; Jewish family Services Board, serving several terms as Vice President and many years as Chair of annual event. She is Vice President and advisor of the not-for-profit Kansas City Advertising Icon Museum. She supports The Children's Place, a day-care center for neglected and abused children, Children's Mercy Hospital. She is also very active in Jewish Family Services and Jewish Federation. Dr. Bernstein supports University of Missouri-Kansas City, and Avila University and has scholarships established in her name. In 2018, in recognition of her and her family's support and ongoing loyalty to the Ronald McDonald House on 25th & Cherry, one of three adjacent to Children's Mercy hospital in the Hospital Hill area, it was officially named "The Bernstein House."
At age 18, Dr. Bernstein attended the University of Oklahoma for one year. The following year her father passed away. Not being able to return to college, she remained in Kansas City with her mother and brother. She worked at a local bank for six years. At age 23, she married Robert, her college sweetheart. With a husband and three children ages 4, 5 and 9, she decided to take a college course at Avila, which was very close to home. That course in 1976 led to much more…
She earned her Bachelor of Arts in psychology (1980) and Master of Science degree in clinical psychology (1981) at Avila College, which is now known as University, both Summa Cum Laude. Having been blessed with continued support and help with the children from her mother, mother-in-law and husband, she soon pursued her Ph.D. in counseling psychology at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. In 1986, Dr. Bernstein earned her Doctor of Philosophy in counseling psychology, summa cum laude, and was awarded a special commendation for high honors and achievement from the Chancellor of the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Her specialization area was family therapy, family systems frame of reference and cognitive behavioral therapy. She is a licensed Ph.D. Psychologist in Missouri. "I look back at my ten year educational journey that changed me I many ways, and my path in life in such a positive way. It was challenging yet fulfilling and rewarding. I have helped others as a practicing psychologist. My clients have taught me so much about courage, strength and survival. Over the years I have mentored and continued to encourage others to go back to school, or choose whatever they have longed to learn or do and that it is never too late."
Dr. Bernstein has been a member of the American Psychological Association and the Greater Kansas City Psychological Association. She has been included as a member of Psi Chi Honor Society, Pi Lambda Theta Honor Society and Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. She has been honored with the Up and Comers Award from the Kansas City Business Journal and the Outstanding Alumni of Avila University Award, She is also a celebrated Marquis listee who has been included in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who of American Women.
Born in 1940 in Baltimore, Maryland to Samuel Wilfred Wilke and Helen Dorothy (Gerson) Wilke, Phyliss Louise has been married to Robert Bernstein since 1964, (who she says she first met when he was a cute lifeguard and he was 17, she was 14, never imagining what would follow years later). They have three adult children: Steve (Law Degree, MBA), Susan (Law Degree, MBA) and David (MBA). She proudly states that each is very involved in leadership roles in civic charitable agencies and organizations in the Greater Kansas City community. Our grandchildren, Noah, Isabel, Max, Miles, Chad, Julia, Ali, Adam, Charlie, Sam and Louie are also following in their footsteps in helping others less fortunate and in need.
Admitting to having a quest for adrenaline activities, Dr, Bernstein has bungee jumped and sky-dived. She enjoys skiing, scuba diving, roller coasters, zip lines, hiking and biking, tennis and golf. She is also passionate about music (from classical to rap), reading, watching all sports and especially spending time with her grandchildren.
