Mr. Hyatt has garnered a laudable reputation as an exemplary attorney for more than four decades. Having worked in private practice since 2014, his firm, Hyatt Disability Law, focuses on administrative law, as well as medical malpractice. Accompanied by a wealth of expertise, Mr. Hyatt earned distinction as a United States Administrative Law Judge, handling Social Security disability cases and hearing thousands of cases in which claimants sought their disability benefits from 1997 until his retirement in 2014.
Beginning his renowned career in 1978 shortly after acquiring his law degree, Mr. Hyatt became a partner of Hyatt, Jackson and Vause in Portland. He later worked for the U.S. Navy as a senior defense counsel for military members on Guam between 1983 and 1984 and as a special assistant for the U.S. Attorney, Department of Justice, in Seattle from 1984 until 1985. Mr. Hyatt subsequently affiliated in private practice for more than a decade, during which he specialized in military law and homicide defense.
Representing numerous clients in murder trials, he is especially proud of a case that involved a U.S. Army Lieutenant accused of murdering his wife. An indisputable highlight of Mr. Hyatt's career, the lieutenant was found not guilty by a military jury. After a lengthy trial and acquittal, the Army finally disclosed a suicide note his wife had left behind. While working in private practice, he also traveled throughout the world representing individuals in homicide defense, including several soldiers that fought in Operation Desert Shield.
In addition to his full-time commitments, Mr. Hyatt maintained involvement as National Counsel for the American Fighter Aces Association in Mesa, Arizona, between 1992 and 1997. An avid civic advocate, he was aligned as a member of the nonprofit organization False Memory Syndrome Foundation and the National Spiritualist Association of Churches and was an elder at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Portland. Most notably, Mr. Hyatt served his country in the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Naval Reserve from 1969 to 1971 in Viet Nam, and again from 1981 to 1985 as a JAG Officer.
Mr. Hyatt initially pursued an education at the University of Oregon, where he attained a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1975. He subsequently attended Lewis and Clark College, from which he received a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1978. Mr. Hyatt has been admitted to practice law by the Oregon Supreme Court, the U.S. District Court of Oregon, the U.S. Court of Military Appeals, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit, the U.S. Court of Federal Claims and the Supreme Court of the United States.
To support his legal career, Mr. Hyatt has been active as a member of the Judge Advocates Association. He is also a member of the Oregon State Bar Association, where he has served as a counsel to bar-ethics, as the chairperson of the military and veterans' section and on the board of governors (ex officio). As a military veteran, Mr. Hyatt is a proud member of the American Legion and a member and former counsel of the American Fighter Aces Museum Foundation. Recently acknowledged with a Life Saving Award from the City of Indio, California in 2020, Mr. Hyatt has also been recognized for his legal career as an AV-Rated Preeminent Attorney through Martindale-Hubble.
