Dr. Shannon is a retired registered medical technologist, educator and administrator with a career marked by a passion not only for how healthcare was delivered to patients, but for how it was presented and taught to future medical professionals. Gifted with a natural aptitude for math and science, she followed her talents into the healthcare industry, earning a diploma from the Kansas City General Hospital School of Medical Technology in 1960. Dr. Shannon began her career as a senior medical technologist at Kansas City General Hospital, rising to become a supervisor of the hematology lab in 1962, and the director of the Special Hematology Laboratory in 1969.
In 1974, Dr. Shannon became an instructor for the School of Medical Technology at the University of Missouri Kansas City (UMKC) School of Medicine. She continued her own education in the early 1970s, earning a Bachelor of Arts from Park College in 1976 and a Master of Arts from the University of Missouri Kansas City in 1978, becoming the first member of her family to attend college. Following the completion of her master's degree, Dr. Shannon was promoted to the role of an assistant professor at UMKC, and began doctoral coursework. In 1983 she was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy and rose to become an associate professor, a title she would hold until 2008. In addition to her course load at UKMC, Dr. Shannon also taught healthcare administration at a satellite classroom of the Central Michigan University Institute for Professional Development, where she would remain as an instructor through the 1988 to 1989 academic year.
Dr. Shannon was named as the director of the office of minority affairs at the UMKC School of Medicine in 1990, beginning a career transition toward administration. During her office, she piloted a number of scholarship and outreach programs to recruit underrepresented students to the medical school, and to better support their positive academic outcomes once enrolled. She advanced to become the assistant dean of the UMKC School of Medicine in 1998, and an associate dean in 2000, continuing her dedication to equity in educational access through establishing the Dr. Reaner and Mr. Henry Shannon Endowed Lectureship in 2006. Dr. Shannon was granted associate professor emerita status in 2008.
As a part of her commitment to equality, Dr. Shannon holds several active leadership roles in charitable and policy groups. She is the commissioned deputy vice chair of the Missouri Environmental Literacy Advisory Commission, a trustee of the Raytown Educational Foundation and a board director of the Black Health Care Coalition. Dr. Shannon is the recipient of numerous accolades for her work, including a University of Kansas City trustees faculty fellowship, a 1999 Outstanding Woman of the Year Award from the National Association of Negro Business & Professional Women's Club Inc. and, recipient of the UMKC Bill French Alumni Service Award.
Dr. Shannon is extensively published in professional journals, and is the co-author of "Laboratory Evaluation of Hemostasis and Thrombosis," released in 1983. In order to remain aware of developments in the field, she was affiliated with the American Society of Coagulationists, the American Society for Medical Technology, and the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, for whom she organized several workshops and conferences. In her retirement, Dr. Shannon is active in her faith as a ministry leader and deaconess of the Paseo Baptist Church, a member of Midtown Kiwanis Club and a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.
