Looking ahead, Dr. Jean Straker intends to enter a well-deserved retirement from nursing while continuing to utilize her expertise as an adjunct professor.
BROOKLYN, NY, July 28, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Jean Straker has been included in Marquis Who's Who. While she was growing up in Barbados, Dr. Straker worked for the government in a daycare center. After relocating, she decided that she wanted to pursue a career in nursing so that she could continue to help people. Over the years, she gained valuable expertise in the field of Nursing and in the post anesthesia care unit at Bellevue Hospital. Currently, she excels as a family nurse practitioner for New York University Langone Health's/NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue. As a family nurse practitioner, Dr. Straker performs physical exams, orders consultations with cardiology, pulmonary, endocrine, pediatric and various other specialists, obtains pre-operative anesthesia consent for a variety of procedures, and conducts pre-operative consultations for ambulatory adult and pediatrics, inpatients, and emergency surgical cases.
Apart from her work with NYU Langone Health, Dr. Straker parlays her expertise to others as an adjunct professor for Saint Francis College. Additionally, she contributes to her community through John Hus Moravian Church and the Eastern Region Moravian Women Ministries, facilitating events for all age groups to address community health promotion, disease prevention and wellness needs of the community. Although her career has been filled with highlights, Dr. Straker is especially proud of her community service with the New York Black Nurses Association, Inc., for which she served as the president from 2013 and 2017 as well as a board member, currently fundraising committee chairperson, membership chairperson, and lifetime member of National Black Nurses Association, Inc.
In pursuit of her career, Dr. Straker pursued and completed an Associate in Applied Science of Nursing, Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Master of Science in Clinical Nurse Specialist in cardiovascular, Post Masters Certificate in Family Nurse Practitioner and a Doctor of Nursing Practice. Her Scholarly Project, "How Will Early Detection and Non-Pharmacological Strategies Reduce the Risk of Pre-hypertension and Prevent Its Progression in African Americans?" was presented at the National Black Nurses Association's 45th Annual Conference in 2017. Throughout her career, Dr. Straker also became certified as a family nurse practitioner in New York and as a national provider identifier by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
In light of her outstanding work in the field, Dr. Straker was presented with a Community Service Award from the New York Black Nurses Association, Inc., in 2006 and recently the recipient for Advanced Practice Nurse of the Year Awards for 2020 from the National Black Nurses Association, Inc., and the Mabel K. Staupers Award for Outstanding Leadership in Nursing Development and Growth in 2017 from Omicron Chapter, NYC Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc. This award is bestowed in honor of Mabel Staupers, a registered nurse who was instrumental in ending the United States Army policy that excluded African American nurses in World War II. Looking ahead, Dr. Straker intends to enter a well-deserved retirement from nursing while continuing to utilize her expertise as an adjunct professor.
