With more than 40 years of experience to his credit, Dr. Simon has excelled at the MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center as the director of the Mercy Hospital Center of Pain Medicine since 1982, a pain consultant since 1981 and a member of the medical staff since 1981. Noted as one of the first formally medical school certificated fellowship-trained anesthesiologists in the field of pain medicine in the United States, he previously completed a pain fellowship at the University of Virginia Pain Management Center between 1980 and 1981. Prior to these positions, Dr. Simon began his career as an anesthesiology resident at Northwestern University from 1977 to 1980.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Simon pursued an education at the University of Arizona, earning a Bachelor of Science with highest distinction, in 1972. Moreover, his academic excellence at the aforementioned university under the advisorship of Dr. Albert Mead Ph.D., garnered him the distinction of valedictorian upon his graduation in December 1972. He concluded his studies at Northwestern University in 1977, obtaining a Doctor of Medicine from the Feinberg School of Medicine. Following these accomplishments, Dr. Simon became certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABMS) in both Anesthesiology and in Pain Management specializations, and also by the American Board of Pain Medicine (ABPM).
Beyond his primary responsibilities within the field, Dr. Simon has participated in numerous endeavors within his professional circles. He has found accomplishment with his written works, including clinical articles and as a contributor to medical pain guidelines published in peer reviewed medical journals. Dr. Simon remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise as well, maintaining his involvement with the Polk County Medical Society, the American Academy of Pain Medicine of which he has served as chairman of the Clinical Practice Committee, the American Society of Anesthesiologists, and the Iowa Society of Anesthesiologists of which he formerly served as president. Dr. Simon is a former president of the Midwest Pain Society. He has served as chairman of the CME Oversight committee and as a member of the Ethics committee of the American Academy of Pain Medicine, and as a regional delegate to the American Society of Anesthesiologists.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Simon has accrued several accolades throughout his career. He was notably recently recognized as a Fellow of the American Society of Anesthesiologists. He was a participant in a study grant from the National Institutes of Health many years ago under the guidance of Dr. Stephen Abram. Dr. Simon was presented the President's Achievement Award from the American Academy of Pain Medicine in 2016 and is the recipient of the Iowa Society of Anesthesiologists Achievement Award in 2019. Dr. Simon was selected for inclusion in the eighth edition of Who's Who in the World and multiple volumes of Who's Who in the Midwest.
Dr. Simon was drawn to the field of medicine as a result of his long standing interest in neurophysiology as well as the influence of his uncle Dr. Morton Aronoff, a noted plastic surgeon. He was also mentored by Dr. Harold Carron, Dr. John Rowlingson, Dr. Honorio Benzon, Dr. Richard Blonsky and Dr. Robert Addison. He cites his dedication to his family and the professional satisfaction that he has experienced throughout his career as the highlights of his personal and professional efforts.
