After graduating from Dartmouth University with a Bachelor of Arts, with honors, he continued his studies at Dartmouth's Amos Tuck School of Business Administration to obtain a Master of Business Administration. Eager to enter the world of business development, Mr. Bergman had only ever intended to pursue the latter degree, but enrolled in law school on the advice of his father, who suggested that legal studies would be an asset to him in any industry.
Mr. Bergman had barely finished his first year of law school when his father passed away unexpectedly, leaving his family with a complex estate process that opened his eyes to the need for tax and accounting professionals specializing in managing high-value accounts. He subsequently earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Michigan Law School, and was admitted to practice law by the Connecticut Bar Association in 1959. Understanding the need for cross-disciplinary expertise, Mr. Bergman became certified as a public accountant soon thereafter.
In 1962, Mr. Bergman began a small solo practice focused on tax planning for wealthy clients. With the goal of someday becoming a major player in the Connecticut market, he continued to refine his expertise and build his business, founding Bergman, Horowitz, & Reynolds, which would merge with the international firm Withers in 2002. Operating as Withers Bergman LLP in the United States, Mr. Bergman's firm employs a staff of more than 1200 in 17 offices on 4 continents and handles cases for clients across the globe.
In addition to his primary work with clients, Mr. Bergman is noted as an in-demand speaker and instructor, having conducted guest lectures at the University of Heidelberg Law School and the University of Michigan Law School, as well as numerous corporate keynote speeches and presentations at conferences. He has contributed his wealth of knowledge to numerous magazine and journal articles, and a guidebook to pension and profit-sharing plans published by the Bureau of National Affairs. The former director of Fleet Bank, Mr. Bergman previously excelled as an advisor to the Yale University School of Medicine's department of psychiatry and the International Arts and Ideas Festival.
Mr. Bergman has been recognized for his legal excellence with Best Lawyer Award annually since 2014.
