Prior to this prestigious appointment, he served a 12-year tenure with the University of California, Berkeley, where he began as a lecturer of mathematics in 1968. While at Berkeley, Dr. Lawson held the posts of associate professor, full professor, and assistant dean until his departure in 1978.
Utilizing his expertise in mathematics and his professional experience, Dr. Lawson also contributed as a visiting professor and researcher with numerous universities and institutes. These included the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, the Instituto Nacional de Matemática Pura e Aplicada in Rio de Janeiro, Institute Des Hautes Études Scientifiques in Bures-sur-Yvette, France, the Mathematics Sciences Research Institute at the University of California Berkeley, Tata Institute for Fundamental Research in Mumbai, India, the Research Institute for Mathematical Sciences in Kyoto, Japan, and the Institute Des Hautes Études Scientifiques in Paris. Dr. Lawson has published over a hundred and thirty papers of original contributions to pure mathematics in the best journals worldwide. He has also written several books on advanced subjects, including: "Spin Geometry", Princeton Press, coauthored with Dr. Marie-Louise Michelsohn; "The Quantitative Theory of Foliations: Proceedings for the CBMS Regional Conference Series in Mathematics"; "The Theory of Gauge Fields in 4 Dimensions"; and "Lectures on Minimal Submanifolds," among others.
A graduate of Brown University, Dr. Lawson earned a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science in Russian Literature and Applied Mathematics in 1964. Soon thereafter, he secured a Master of Science in Mathematics from Stanford University in 1996. Dr. Lawson completed his academic efforts with a Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics from the renowned institution in 1968.
Some of the highlights of Dr. Lawson's career were: his construction of closed minimal surfaces in the 3-dimensional sphere; the characterization of boundaries of complex analytic varieties and chains with R. Harvey; the construction of codimension- one foliations of higher-dimensional spheres, a result which was entered that year in the Encyclopedia Britannica – an exceptional honor; work on classifying manifolds of positive scalar curvature, with M. Gromov; and basic results on manifolds of non-positive curvature, with S.T. Yau. There are two more important areas of Dr. Lawson's research. The first was his work on Calibrated Geometries with Reese Harvey. While working together in Texas, the two discovered generalizations of Kaehler Geometries which have become a section of the American Mathematical Society's list of major areas of modern mathematical research, and which also have come center-stage in string theory and M-theory in modern physics. The other was his work on algebraic cycles, which related in a basic way, classical objects in Algebraic Geometry with modern homotopy theory.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Lawson has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences, the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, and the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. He has been a Sloan Foundation Fellow and a Guggenheim Foundation Fellow, and has received the Leroy P. Steele Prize from the American Mathematical Society. Likewise, he has been selected for inclusion in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who in the World.
