Dr. McIlwain has garnered a laudable reputation as a physicist, researcher and professor at the University of California at San Diego (UCSD). Earning distinction as a faculty member since 1962, he notably assisting in establishing the university and was promoted to become a full professor of physics in 1966. Throughout the course of his career at the university, he was instrumental in the design and development of experimental equipment for several spacecraft. Moreover, Dr. McIlwain was responsible for many early discoveries involving outer space, including devising the universally used magnetic coordinate system for studying charged particles. Prior to joining the UCSD faculty, he enjoyed two years as an assistant professor at the University of Iowa between 1960 and 1962.
As a seasoned scientist, Dr. McIlwain has contributed over 70 articles to various peer reviewed journals and holds several patents. During the early stages of his career, he was active on numerous committees, including the space sciences steering committee and fields and particles subcommittee for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the advisory committee for radiation hazards in supersonic transports for the Federal Aviation Administration and the space sciences board for the National Research Council. Dr. McIlwain also distinguished himself as a member of the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics in Germany from 1977 to 1983.
An alumnus of North Texas State College, Dr. McIlwain received a Bachelor of Art in music in 1953 on a scholarship. He subsequently transferred to the University of Iowa, where he attained both a Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1956 and 1960, respectively. An elected fellow of the American Geophysical Union, Dr. McIlwain was also honored by the organization in 1975 with the John A. Fleming Award for original research and technical leadership in geomagnetism, atmospheric electricity, aeronomy and related sciences. He is also a member of the American Physical Society and the American Astronomical Society.
Eminently recognized in his field, Dr. McIlwain received two Guggenheim fellowships, and has also been recognized with several accolades for his contributions to the field. To wit, he was bestowed with a Space Sciences Award from the American Institute of Aerospace and Astronautics in 1970, a Senior U.S. Scientist Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Germany in 1976 and the Hannes Alfven Medal from the European Geophysics Society in 2000. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. McIlwain has been showcased in over 25 editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the West.
