Named as the J. Roberts and Marcia Fosberg distinguished professor in pharmacy at Washington State University (WSU) in 2019, Dr. Baker has been a faculty member on campus for close to 40 years. During his tenure, he served as the director of clinical pharmacy programs, interim chairperson of the pharmacy department, associate dean of clinical programs and associate dean of external professional and continuing education. Moreover, Dr. Baker has served as the director of the Drug Information Center, a drug information service and teaching laboratory, since 1983. While pursuing the responsibilities of his role, he notably supervises postgraduate Doctor of Pharmacy residents that are specializing in drug information and pharmacy education. He previously worked at the University of Oklahoma as an assistant professor for three years and Saint Paul Vocational Institute as an instructor of pharmacology for respiratory therapists for one year.
Throughout his academic career as a professor of pharmacotherapy, Dr. Baker has taught courses in pharmacotherapy, pharmacokinetics, drug information and evidence-based medicine. He has also trained many new health care professional and pharmacists that have gone on to lead successful careers in the field. As a seasoned professional, Dr. Baker has earned distinction for his work in pharmacy, specifically in drug formularies, managed care and, among other areas, outdoor medical care. His studies have been published in more than 655 papers in scholarly journals and 2400 in drug information systems and has contributed over 50 additional articles, chapters, and monographs elsewhere. Likewise, Dr. Baker has served in various editorial roles, has served as peer reviewer for several premier publications and has contributed chapters to several books as well.
Aligned with numerous professional organizations, Dr. Baker has been a consultant to the Food and Drug Administration's arthritis advisory committee. He has also been heavily involved with the U.S. Pharmacopeia, where he was appointed to one of its expert committees and two of its expert panels. He has been a consultant or volunteer for the nonprofit organization since 1987. Furthermore, Dr. Baker has continued to serve as a pharmacy advisory board member for Accredo Health (Express Scripts) since 2007 and remains active with the Institute for Safe Medication Practices Inc. He was previously on the national Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee for Medco Health Solutions for 17 years prior to its acquisition in 2012.
A dedicated civic advocate, Dr. Baker has been invested with numerous initiatives over the years. Most notably, he has worked with the National Ski Patrol as an outdoor emergency care administrator, instructor and trainer for the Inland Empire region and Pacific Northwest Division since 1999, a senior patrolman since 1998 and outdoor emergency transportation instructor since 2005. Other activities to Dr. Baker's credit include serving as the president of the 49 Degrees North Ski Patrol Foundation since 2006.
To prepare for his career, Dr. Baker received a bachelor's and doctorate degree in pharmacy at Washington State University and the University of Minnesota in 1978 and 1980, respectively. He is a licensed pharmacist in the state of Washington. Dr. Baker is also an elected fellow of the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists and the American Society of Hospital Pharmacists. Affiliated with several other industry-related organizations to support his career, he is a member of the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy, American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, American Society of Consultant Pharmacists, as well as the Washington Pharmacists Association, where he was bestowed with the Pharmacist of Year Award in 1992.
Recognized with numerous awards and recognitions, Dr. Baker's most recent accolade was the Thomas S. Foster Award from the U.S. Pharmacopoeia in 2019. He also received the Smith, Kline and French Laboratories Award for Superior Achievement in Clinical Pharmacy, was named as the Pharmacist of the Year by the Washington State Pharmacy Association, received a WSU Faculty Excellence Award and a Pharmacist Achievement Award from Merck Sharp and Dohme. For his work with the National Ski Patrol, Dr. Baker was named as an Outstanding Alpine Patroller and Outstanding Outdoor Emergency Care Instructor for the Inland Empire region and the Pacific Northwest Division. A celebrated Marquis listee, he has been featured in over 20 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in the West.
