A seasoned attorney with more than 40 years of inimitable experience, Mr. Bruner currently excels as an arbitrator and mediator for JAMS, where he specializes in construction, engineering and infrastructure claims both nationally and internationally. Prior to joining JAMS, he gained valuable expertise in the field as a senior partner and founding head of Faegre and Benson (now Faegre Drinker Biddle & Reath) between 1991 and 2007 and as a senior partner with Hart & Bruner during the 1980s. During the earliest stages of his career, Mr. Bruner worked as an associate and partner with Briggs and Morgan PC and served his country as a judge advocate with the United States Air Force.
Throughout his extensive career, Mr. Bruner has participated in many notable national and international cases as an arbitrator and mediator. To wit, he presided over a condominium conversion in New York City, in which he was the sole arbitrator appointed by multiple parties under AAA Rules to decide claims aggregating $125,000,000 arising out of conversion of a warehouse into luxury condominiums. Mr. Bruner also mediated the settlement of disputes between a contractor and a subcontractor and its surety over completion issues regarding the National September 11 Memorial and Museum. Internationally, he also has chaired arbitration tribunals deciding large disputes arising out of construction of a Canadian natural gas processing plant, a South American gold and silver mine, and military facilities in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Prior to embarking upon his professional journey, Mr. Bruner pursued a formal education at Princeton University, from which he attained a Bachelor of Arts in history. Following this accomplishment, he earned a Master of Business Administration from Syracuse University and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Michigan Law School. Upon graduating, Mr. Bruner was admitted to practice law through the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh, Eighth, Ninth, Tenth and Federal Circuits, the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Wisconsin and the District of North Dakota, the United States Court of Federal Claims, the United States Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces, the Supreme Court of the United States and the Supreme Courts of Minnesota and Wisconsin.
To remain aware of developments affecting the field, Mr. Bruner has maintained his affiliations with a number of pertinent organizations. To wit, he is a Founding Fellow and Past President of The American College of Construction Lawyers, a member of the London Court of International Arbitration, the advisory board of the Institute of Transnational Arbitration, the International Chamber of Commerce, the International Construction Law Association, and Britain's Society of Construction Arbitrators. Mr. Bruner also contributed through leadership positions with the American Bar Association's Forum on Construction Law International Law Division and the Fidelity & Surety Law Committee, the Inter-Pacific Bar Association's International Projects Committee and the construction industry advisory board of Thomson Reuters.
Mr. Bruner is the co-author with Patrick J. O'Connor Jr. of Bruner and O'Connor on Construction Law, the 12 volume, 11,000 word legal treatise regarded as the most authoritative work ever written on the field of law governing construction and cited by more than 450 federal and state court judicial opinions. Mr. Bruner also has authored and co-authored more than 50 publications regarding dispute resolution, construction issues and related matters, and has presented more than 350 lectures to professional or construction industry audiences around the world. He has also chaired numerous professional conferences. In recognition of his outstanding work, he won an Air Force Accommodation Medal, the Norman Royce Prize of Britain's Society of Construction Arbitrators for scholarly writing, and the Cornerstone Award awarded by the American Bar Association Forum on Construction Law to one person annually for "exceptional service to the construction industry, to the public and to the legal profession". For nearly two decades he has been listed in Best Lawyers in America, and in the past decade has been repeatedly acknowledged by International Who's Who of Business Lawyers as one of the world's leading arbitrators, mediators and construction lawyers.
